Bridgerton stars Nicola Coughlan and Luke Newton have opened up about their sex scenes in season 3, with the Penelope actress shutting down a myth about the intimate sequences.

In mere days, Netflix viewers around the world will be transported back to the high society world of Regency-era London for one of the show’s most highly-anticipated romances.

Yes – the time has finally come for Penelope Featherington and Colin Bridgerton – aka ‘Polin’ – to realise that passion has been brewing under the surface of their friendship for years.

Metro.co.uk recently had the chance to speak to Nicola, 37, and Luke, 31, about the development of their characters’ relationship, including breaking down the physical and emotional barriers that had been put up between these long-term friends.

Having worked together and known each other for five years since Bridgerton started, Luke shared that it was ‘really interesting’ to reach this intense point of Penelope and Colin’s story.

‘We have been leading to this moment the whole time, and fans have been really anticipating that moment,’ he said.

He explained that while they were filming seasons one and two of Bridgerton, they had the romance ‘in the back of their minds’, fully aware that there was a ‘spark and connection’ between them.

‘But it’s about underplaying it so that we can really get to the crux of the story,’ he outlined.

Nicola added that it was a ‘eureka moment’ for her when she realised that they had been ‘holding back the chemistry for two seasons because they weren’t meant to be in love’.

‘And then it was like we held on and held on, and then when we were ready to go, it was like, there it is,’ she said. There it is indeed!

When it came to actually filming the intimate scenes that Penelope and Colin share, the Derry Girls actress explained that they worked with an ‘amazing intimacy coordinator’ called Lizzy Talbot, who previously worked on the first two seasons of the show.

‘It’s funny because I think people are so curious about them and what they do,’ Nicola said of the role, which was only introduced widely in the entertainment industry within the past decade.

‘People go well, is it like a stunt or is it like a dance? It’s not really like that,’ she clarified.

‘It’s more like giving you a framework to do it the way you want to do it. And we had a lot of say in how we wanted things to go.

‘It’s not like, you kiss for three seconds and then you move your hand. We knew we had to hit certain points, but we were able to flow with it and make it seem natural and organic. It’s amazing having that control. It makes you feel very empowered.’

Luke recollected how there were ‘moments’ during filming when ‘it took a moment to reset’, when he and Nicola realised: ‘Oh, we’re actually doing this.’

‘We’re exploring all these different sides of these two characters. Something completely new for these two, but it felt appropriate for the season,’ he said.

‘Also that we were friends, it felt appropriate to the story. It just made sense that we had this history between us as well as the characters.’

‘We thankfully were very comfortable with one another,’ Nicola added. ‘It would have been so difficult to do it and create that level of intimacy on screen had we not had that friendship or that foundation together. So I feel like we were very lucky.’

Plenty of Bridgerton fans have been waiting with bated breath for Penelope and Colin to finally let those inevitable sparks fly, including those who were first introduced to the characters through the TV show, and book readers who have been desperate to see the pairing get together in live-action.

In a message directed at the fans, Luke thanked them all ‘for their patience’.

‘I really feel like we’ve made something that they’re gonna love,’ he said. ‘We’ve incorporated so many things from the books that we’ve seen online are fan favourites already, which was amazing to shoot. It had like a weird energy on set those days.’

Nicola chimed in to add: ‘It was very exciting and nerve-wracking to shoot those scenes.’

Wrapping up their heartfelt message to all of the Bridgerton devotees out there, the Colin star concluded: ‘Just thank you, and I hope they love it as much as we did.’

The Penelope actress – also known by her pen name Lady Whistledown – delivered one last simple but earnest expression of gratitude, saying: ‘We worked hard and we hope we did you proud.’

Bridgerton season 3 part 1 is set to premiere on May 16, with part 2 to follow on June 13.
