Hollywood icon Meg Ryan has made her first Met Gala appearance since her debut in the early 2000s.

The 62-year-old star kept things classic and chic amid some rather avant-garde looks, to varying success according to a brutal public.

Meg was positively beaming at the fashion event of the year in her black dress with sheer bodice, covered in black flowers with sparkling detail.

She and guest Michael Kors added some Aviator sunglasses giving a rock edge to her chic gown, turquoise Cartier earrings, and signature short blonde hair.

Her last foray to the Met Gala was in 2001, where the theme was inspired by Jackie Kennedy’s ‘White House Years’.

At the time she attended with her Kate & Leopold co-star Liev Schreiber, having just split with ex-husband Dennis Quaid.

The Top Gun actress and Parent Trap star finalised their divorce in the July and share a son, Jack Quaid.

Meg’s re-emergence comes after she shared how much she’s loving life in her 60s and felt ‘liberated’ by her age.

‘I appreciate my years, I say that seriously. ‘I appreciate my age. For me, now, it is more important to say clearly what you think rather than pleasing others and trying to make everyone happy,’ she told IO Donna

The When Harry Met Sally icon continued: ‘I feel almost liberated because I have said certain things and made observations about love and relationships.

‘And for trying to be honest. I can finally look back and be in the present at the same time.’

Despite her accolades, Meg had taken a step back from starring in movies as she needed a ‘break’ to explore life outside Hollywood.

After eight years away she returned to screen last year in What Happens Later, but said her work life balance was much better.

‘I needed other experiences, to meet people outside the film industry. For this reason I moved to New York, I raised my daughter Daisy, and then on I started travelling, especially to distant countries,’ she said.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk about her return to Hollywood, she revealed she didn’t get a ‘wink of sleep’ before her first day on set.

Meg said: ‘I did not sleep – I’ve never not slept a whole night in my life, ever, except for maybe jet lag at some moment. But the night before we started shooting, I didn’t get one wink of sleep.’

As the co-writer and director, alongside playing the whimsical Willa to David Duchovny’s more uptight and anxious Bill, a lot was riding on Ryan’s shoulders during the 21-day shoot at a working airport.

‘I just felt like we can’t be precious about this, and we’ve got to use our time. So, I kept pretending there was a director who was outside of the building, who was maybe in a trailer, and we could do what we wanted and then catch him or her up on it,’ she explained.
