Bodkin is the latest Netflix TV series to excite viewers, but many want to know where the dark comedy thriller series is filmed.

Netflix has made a splash in 2024 as they have already released several homegrown TV series that have delighted and excited fans.

From One Day to Beckham, to Baby Reindeer, the platform has released several shows ranging from romantic comedies to gritty and trauma-filled series.

Taking a stab at an Only Murders in the Building-style show, Bodkin is Netflix’s latest offering to fans launched on May 9.

The series focuses on podcasters in Ireland attempting to solve a cold case from many years ago.

While it may sound sinister, the series is a dark comedy filled with humour, witty one-liners, and hilarious characters that add colour and fun to this thriller.

In the trailer, the characters state that they are in the ‘a*** end of nowhere’, but fans want to know if the coastal town is a real place, or simply imagined for the series.

What is Bodkin on Netflix about?

Starring Will Forte as an American podcaster and Siobhán Cullen as the reluctant investigative journalist from Dublin he teams up with, the TV series follows a group of podcasters investigating mysterious disappearances that occurred over two decades ago in a charming town in Ireland.

Forte stars as Gilbert Power, who decides to move into the true-crime genre after having a previous hit when he documented his wife’s cancer.

To explore his Irish heritage, he chooses to investigate the disappearance of three people from Bodkin in Cork, Ireland during the annual Samhain festival.

Despite a frosty initial reception from the locals in the area, the characters settle in and begin to uncover the truth in this show filled with black humour.

Where is Bodkin filmed?

Bodkin is not a real place in Ireland, but filming took place predominantly in West Cork in the summer of 2022, where Bodkin is supposed to be located.

The majority of ‘Bodkin’ was filmed in Union Hall, a fishing village located on the west side of Glandore Harbour. As of 2016, a census showed the village was home to just 260 inhabitants.

Siobhán Cullen, who plays a journalist named Dove in the show told Express: ‘Union Hall makes the perfect Bodkin.

‘It’s so stunning and it encapsulates all of what people imagine about the beauty of Ireland. It’s all here, it’s such a stunning place.’

Key locations in Cork include Poulgorm Bridge and Glandore.

Other filming locations were in Wicklow and Dublin, and filming took place over six months. Eagle-eyed viewers may also spot scenes shot at Travelhawk Beach in Wicklow and Howth Castle and Leopardstown Racecourse in Dublin.

Is it based on a true story?

The creators of the show have expressed that the series is entirely fictional. ‘Not a real story, not a real place,’ said executive producer Alex Metcalf to Tudum.

Series creator Jez Scharf added: ‘It’s a fake town, it’s a fake place. It’s all fake people.

‘The mystery itself, we worked very hard to find something that is in no way adjacent to a real true crime story. The fictionality of it was very deliberate.’

Bodkin was released on Netflix on May 9 and is available to stream now.
