‘It’s a nightmare,’ says gamer who spent seven years updating Prey fans on a possible sequel, as developer Arkane Austin closes its doors.

The devastating trend of job cuts in the video games industry hasn’t slowed down at all this year, with the most recent stint of layoffs seeing Microsoft closing Hi-Fi Rush studio Tango Gameworks, mobile developer Alpha Dog, and Redfall and Prey maker Arkane Austin.

As if that’s not enough, sources claim Xbox is planning more job cuts and increasing the price of its subscription service Game Pass Ultimate.

The news has hit one particular Prey fan extra hard, one who’s dedicated seven years of their life to updating fans on Twitter, on whether or not Prey 2 has been announced yet.

A Twitter account named ‘Has Prey 2 Been Announced Yet?’ has posted an update every day for 2,559 days, answering its own handle on whether a sequel is in the works.

Prey came out in 2017 and every day since then they’ve simply tweeted, ‘No,’ followed by how many days it’s been since they started counting.

It was on day 2,559 that it was announced that Arkane Austin is shutting down, but this time the tweet, which has been liked 50,000 times, said: ‘It’s over. (Day 2,559).’

The news has squashed what little hope the account owner clung onto for a sequel, as they later posted:

‘This isn’t a dream. It’s a nightmare. Thank you for the recent support, however, this likely marks the end of this account. Support Arkane Lyon and support your favourite indie imsim [Immersive simulator] creators if you can.’

Arkane Austin released the underwhelming Redfall in 2023, while sister studio Arkane Lyon, which hasn’t been closed, continues to develop the recently announced Marvel’s Blade.

The most tragic news for the fan is that it’s reported that, before it was shutdown, Arkane Austin was pitching a new immersive simulator. Rumours suggest it was a new Dishonored game, but there’s an outside chance it could’ve been a Prey sequel…
