Avicii’s former girlfriend Emily Goldberg has died at the age of 34 after declaring she was ‘cancer free’ just one year ago.

Goldberg died on April 3, 2024, in La Jolla, California. The cause of death was a pulmonary embolism.

She is survived by her parents, Julie and Sam Goldberg of La Jolla, and brother Aaron Goldberg of Chicago, Illinois.

Born on December 3, 1989 in Poway, California she was described in her obituary as a ‘vivacious and unique’ individual who had ‘many adventures in her all too brief life’.

She was an animal-lover with two dogs called Bear and Kuma, and her interests spanned from art to photography, to American and Japanese wrestling.

Goldberg’s death comes six years after former boyfriend, world-famous DJ Avicii – real name Tim Bergling – took his own life in April 2018 aged 28.

Last year Goldberg – who dated Avicii from 2011 to 2013 – celebrated being ‘cancer free’ in a social media post, having lived with the disease for a year.

Alongside a picture of her giving a thumbs up, she wrote: ‘I lived b****. I have had cancer for the past year. I am now cancer free.’

After the death of Avicii – known for club hits including Wake Me Up and Levels – Goldberg wrote a loving tribute to her former partner of two years.

She said: ‘“Come on babe, don’t give up on us. Choose me, and I’ll show you love,” those are lyrics from a song Tim wrote for me. I wish I could have lived up to them.

‘For the two years we were together, he was my closest confidante, and my best friend. Now I can’t look at Bear without knowing I’ll never see his face again. I’m still collecting my thoughts and thank you for all your kind words and texts.

Nodding to lyrics from one of the DJ’s greatest hits, she ended the post with: ‘Wake me up when it’s all over, because I don’t want it to be real.’

Goldberg often posted about Avicii following his death on his birthday and other landmarks.

In one post Goldberg called him her ‘best friend and soul mate’ while in another, posted just one month after his death, she remembered how much he’d helped her through various health issues.

‘I finally had that procedure on my spine yesterday that I told you about,’ Goldberg wrote in a post alongside a picture of her and Avicii talking to each other on a video call.

‘You were right, it did help, and I didn’t need to worry. Maybe things are looking up for me after all?’

She continued: ‘You were always there for me when I was a member of #teamstomachproblems back in the day.

‘You’d drop everything to make a surprise visit, even when your schedule was packed to the brim.

‘You’d call my parents when I was hooked up to the IV in the ER and tell them their baby was okay. Then you’d give my urine sample to the nurses…something most men would be too embarrassed or immature to do…but you wanted to find out ASAP if I was okay.

‘You’d spend hours on Skype with me when you couldn’t be there, listening to me complain about my stomach pains, and things that definitely don’t matter anymore.’

Repeating that she wanted everyone to know how ‘loving’ Avicii was, Goldberg added: ‘You had more love in your 28 years in this world than most people I’ve met. People need to know you were full of love.’
