Doctor Who fans have been left gobsmacked after two Strictly Come Dancing stars appeared on the most recent episode.

The long-running series returned to screens this weekend, with Ncuti Gatwa officially now taking over as the Time Lord, with Millie Gibson as his companion.

On Saturday two episodes were released, Space Babies and The Devil’s Chord.

In the latter, the Doctor and Ruby went back in time to meet The Beatles, but were faced with a challenge when discovering the all-powerful Maestro was changing history and London then ‘became a battleground with the future of humanity at stake’.

After restoring order, the Doctor then informed Ruby that after all of his adventures through time and space there was ‘always a twist at the end’, before making a knowing wink at the camera.

The episode then ended with a music and dance number, which saw Strictly head judge Shirley Ballas and professional dancer Johannes Radebe pop up.

The pair appeared in the routine dancing with the Doctor and Ruby, with Johannes also sporting a wig with long curly hair and a goatee.

Although their appearance in the show was announced months ago, many of those tuning in were still caught off guard.

‘JOHANNES RADEBE?! SHIRLEY BALLAS?! WHAT ARE YOU GUYS DOING HERE AND NOT ON STRICTLY?!’ Kez posted on X.

‘Can’t get ‘There’s always a twist’ out of my head and seeing Johannes and Shirley Ballas dancing,’ James shared.

‘On top of everything else (including cameos for June Hudson and Murray Gold), Johannes and Shirley Ballas in the dance number. Bonkers’ user KippyWoo added.

Soon after Shirley shared a series of photos of them on set, asking her followers if they’d spotted her and Johannes.

One joked he had ‘screamed’ with excitement when seeing them appear.

During an interview on Morning Live in November last year, Doctor Who showrunner Russell T Davies was asked about cameos in the upcoming season, with attention then turning to Shirley, who was also in the studio.

‘Do you mean the top-secret information that Shirley Ballas is going to appear on Doctor Who?’ he said, before she was asked about the new gig.

‘Well, I can tell you the filming was one of the best days of my life,’ she explained.

‘I am doing a guest appearance with JoJo (Johannes Radebe) where I actually get to perform with him and so many other dancers on the show.

‘So, I am very, very excited for people to watch.’

Speaking about securing her for the series, Russell then said he made sure he was on set that day to watch Shirley at work as he was ‘not going to miss that’.

The next episodes of Doctor Who airs next Saturday at 6:50pm on BBC One.
