Comedy legend James Gregory has died after suffering a heart attack at the age of 78.
The comedian’s death was confirmed on his official Facebook page – which has over a million followers – sparking an outpouring of grief from fans.
The post read: ‘Today, with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of the Funniest Man in America, comedian James Gregory.
‘He brought laughter and joy to countless lives, leaving an indelible mark on the world of comedy and those who loved him.’
It continued: ‘James’ three nieces who referred to him as ‘Uncle Bubba,’ Martha Anne, Mary Jane, and Candie, along with their families, were instrumental in caring for him through his last days and weeks.’
Gregory first made a name for himself in the comedy world in the 1980s, when he began MCing at legendary The Punch Line comedy club in Atlanta in 1981.

Gregory was known for his Southern charm and wry sense of humour, travelling the United States throughout his long career and eventually earning the nickname ‘the Funniest Man in America.’
Gregory, who was born in 1946, was the first member of his family to graduate high school, rising from humble roots to eventually become a mainstay of the American comedy scene.
