Olly Alexander’s dad is focusing on the positives after his son’s devastating defeat at the Eurovision Song Contest.

The Years & Years hitmaker represented the UK in the annual singing competition, but he finished in 18th place with zero points from the public vote after his performance of Dizzy.

The nation is reeling from the disappointment, but his dad David Thornton thinks it can actually be a good thing.

‘This is going to be a fantastic learning experience for him, he’s had a wonderful time out there,’ he told the BBC. ‘It is just one more step in wherever he’s going to go next.’

Meanwhile, David admitted he was shocked his son’s song didn’t resonate with the audience, particularly after it impressed enough to earn 46 points from the jury vote.

‘I enjoyed every minute of it,’ he added. ‘To me it’s a real surprise the public didn’t sort of connect with that song, though the juries gave it a really good score.’

The 33-year-old star himself is yet to actually address the disappointment, although on Sunday he did heap praise on Swiss star Nemo after their big win.

He wrote: ‘Nemo!!!! You did it!! I’m so so proud of you it’s been such an honour to be on this journey with you. You broke the code!!!’

Despite the disappointment, Olly – who finished 18th out of 25 – has support from people up and down the country, including Bafta winning presenter Lorraine Kelly.

‘Do you know what? I thought the way that he handled the fact that – the scandal – that we got no points from the audience… what the bloody hell is going on? But he handled it so well,’ she told Metro.co.uk

‘I mean, obviously, of course, he’s going to be crushed, but he’ll bounce back. Absolutely fine.’

She added: ‘I really loved his song. I think it’s a hit. His performance, it was so sexy. I just want to support him somehow. And I hope all British people will support him as well.’

On the big night, viewers complained of sound issues during the ambitious routine, as some fans felt that Olly’s voice was quieter than it should have been, with some even remarking it was ‘muffled’.

Amongst those complaining was Kate Hull, who wrote: ‘What’s wrong with the sound on #ollyalexander performance? Or is it just my telly? Sounded quiet.’

‘Why does Olly Alexander sound so muffled? Vocals don’t seem balanced to backing,’ asked Julia Tobias, while Living In A Box added: ‘Go on Ollie Alexander #Eurovision2024 Don’t why the sound guys buried the vocal though.’

Prior to the competition, he had made peace with whichever position he finished in, joking: ‘It doesn’t matter where you place. If you come last it’s kind of iconic, nil points.’
