Jeremy Vine has all but confirmed Eggheads is over in an update which will leave fans devastated.

The 58-year-old presenter has weighed in on the future of the long running quiz show, which first launched on the BBC in 2003 before moving to Channel 5 three years ago.

However, there haven’t been any new episodes in over a year, with the most recent edition airing in April 2023.

There have been plenty of rumours about the show, and now Jeremy appears to have fanned the flames amid speculation it has been shelved.

‘I haven’t heard anything about Eggheads for a while now,’ he told The Sun.

‘I think I have done about 1200 shows – but whether we are doing any more, I don’t know. We last filmed an episode over a year ago.’

The show, which was first hosted by Dermot Murnaghan before Jeremy joined in 2008, pitted groups of contestants against a panel of experts – the titular Eggheads – as they tried to win the cash prize.

The host admitted there is still a chance the programme could make a comeback one day, but it’s not on the cards right now.

He added: ‘It may well be we are doing it in 30 years’ time, who knows, but no immediate plans for any more.

Back in 2021, Jeremy was excited for the series to have found a new home.

‘The programme which I presented for more than 10 years, Eggheads, one of the greatest quizzes in the history of British TV, is moving to Channel 5 later this year,’ he said at the time.

Meanwhile, Commissioning Editor Daniel Pearl was ‘delighted’ by the deal, as he hailed it as a big ‘step in the transformation’ of the broadcaster.

‘I’m delighted that Eggheads, one of the UK’s most loved quiz shows, has found a brand-new home on Channel 5,’ he added. ‘This is yet another step in the transformation of Channel 5 as it grows its audience rapidly.’

Explaining the ‘difficult’ decision to move on from the show, the BBC insisted back in 2021 that the choice was made ‘to grow new shows’.

‘We would like to thank the Eggheads and host Jeremy Vine for their time on the BBC and wish them well with their next chapter,’ they said.

Eggheads is available to stream on My5.
