The price of remasters
I totally believe that there will be remasters for Zelda, and probably many other games, on the Switch. But I feel the big question is will Nintendo charge for them? The Wii U situation is different because most people didn’t have the original games, but the Switch has been a huge hit and all the games most likely to get remasters have had millions upon millions of sales. Is Nintendo really going to charge £60 for them again?
I know they’d like to – Nintendo might be the ‘nice’ console maker but they still love money – but I can’t believe they’d make that mistake. Maybe if Breath Of The Wild had a lot of new content but I don’t think it will… they’ve got other things to concentrate on and Aonuma was pretty clear that he’s finished what that duology of games.
Here’s my guess: there’ll be a small fee, of around £10 to £20, for anyone that already owns the game or if you haven’t bought them, they’ll be full price as usual. I’d prefer they were free, but I can’t pretend I wouldn’t pay that much for a 4K and 60fps Zelda game.
My only concern is what about if you own the game on cartridge? Are they going to have a slot on the Switch 2 just for that? Even though I’m sure the rumour was that they were using a new format. I’ll be impressed if they go to that effort but, as everyone knows, you never can tell with Nintendo.

Competing formats
What is going on with Sony and how it’s treating its PC games? It’s like they saw Microsoft messing up with Xbox and thought ‘Hold my beer’ in terms of how to waste all your experience and money on schoolboy errors. They’d literally rather people not buy their games than not have PSN accounts, and for a mostly single-player game?!
I’d be the first one to complain if Google or someone entered the games business but. Really. PlayStation and Xbox are looking like chumps at the moment. I thought at first that the Reader’s Feature at the weekend was an exaggeration, but like the reader in the Inbox said… thinking about it, I can’t really disagree.
They are both making a bad situation worse. Not only that but their skill at making it worse is basically the most competent either has been in a long time. Our two industry leaders are asleep at the wheel and the only thing they’re good at anymore is being bad.

Unofficial exclusive
Not that Square Enix isn’t right to give up with the PlayStation 5 exclusives but I really don’t see being on the Xbox making any difference. I remember when they finally got Metal Gear Solid on there, I think it was with the remaster of 3, and it didn’t sell at all. Some franchises are so associated with a particular series that it’s basically pointless to release it on anything else.
Maybe if the Switch 2 can run enough of their games that could do well, since Final Fantasy used to be a Nintendo-associated franchise, but that was a long time ago and I’m sure very few gamers in the West think of it as anything other than a PlayStation series.
Square Enix really should have done this a long time ago, but I hope whatever they do in the future works out because Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a fantastic game and I want to see more like it.

Hard copy
On the topic of game magazines, have you ever considered a yearly GameCentral annual/magazine for Christmas time?
It could be sold direct to those who want it and cover the best of the year game reviews, news articles, letters, and hot topics, etc.
Along with a prediction of the year ahead, next five years, and even 10 years. And maybe the odd quiz and dot-to-dot puzzles!
Well, maybe not the dot-to-dot puzzles!
I know I would buy a physical copy if it was available. Or even digital if that was the only option.

Downward curve
100% spot on, Xbox and PSN are on the way out, with the power of both Xbox and PlayStation the games seems to be getting worse not better. Very little depth to any game, same carbon copy of the last game.
All of them coming out that need patches to fix them as they have been rushed, and the true crime near all game with microtransactions. Hate that! Just money grabbing.

Evil gimmicks
Very excited to hear about all the Resident Evil rumours at the moment. At the very least I hope it’s a case of no smoke without fire. Although, I don’t feel rumours really matter with Resident Evil because while it’s kind of interesting to know who the protagonist is, or where it’s set, that doesn’t really make a difference to the gameplay.
What matters is the gimmick and the level of horror versus action. I don’t necessarily like it one way or the other but varying those factors is what makes the various games interesting and different. After the completely non-scary Resident Evil Village (except for that bit) I think something a bit more horror focused would be a good idea.
A new type of monster would be a good idea too. I like the readers’ recent suggest of Lovecraftian creatures, but I’m not sure Capcom would ever go that far. But if Village was inspired by classic Universal monsters, then the next one needs to have a new theme too.
If Leon is the star then how about gimmick where he’s been infected by the zombie virus and his limbs are rotting away but he can replace them with bionic ones. Maybe that’s a bit silly too but I think something needs to be happening that isn’t just shooting monsters with a gun. We’ve seen that hundreds of times before and, for me, those were the worst bits of Village.
Here’s hoping that Capcom comes up with some more workable ideas than I have.

Worth crowing about
Mega long time reader, and first time writer, but just wanted to sing the praises of Crow Country. I finished it last night and loved the old school charm and vibe of it. And let’s not forget that simply stupendous ladder near the end, a rarity nowadays!
Cheers, and keep up the good work GC, it’s always a pleasure reading in a morning with a coffee!

Better than ever
In general, I never replay games. When the credits roll on a game I’m typically done with it and any great intentions of going back to do those bits I missed, or play the game a different way, fade away while I move onto the next shiny thing.
However, for a while I’ve been contemplating replaying Sunset Overdrive, which I’ve not really touched since the game launched. Naturally, after reinstalling it, I then proceeded to ignore it for months but I’m pleased to say a few weeks ago I actually started it up and following an awkward process to delete the games save data and stop it resyncing I was back at the start (would a new game option really have been that hard for Insomniac to add?).
Now, on the few occasions I’ve gone back to an older game, or at least looked it up, a common theme has been games being way, way better in your mind compared to the actual reality. But this is an awesome little game that now runs so much better on the newer consoles. The annoyingly long loading times with fast travel are gone, and everything I remember loving about it the first time is still just as good all these years later.
The game has a brilliant self-deprecating humour, characters are fun, traversal is really satisfying and the bright coloured art style might not be the most graphically cutting edge in detail but is one that appeals to me. The character creator even has characters I like, rather than 5,000 variations of bland.
If you haven’t played it before I recommend giving it a go (it’s on Game Pass obvs). With everything happening at Xbox at the moment, who knows, maybe it will follow Sea Of Thieves and we’ll start seeing old Xbox one exclusives start topping the PlayStation 5 charts.

The excellent Vampire Survivors game just had a new update. Operation Guns, a Contra style add on, is now available for the massive cost of £1.99! If you can afford it and love the main game give it a shot.

GC: If we get the time we’ll review it, but it’s unexpectedly busy at the moment for new releases.
I’ll tell you now, I’m far more interested in seeing a new Doom at the Xbox Games Showcase than Call Of Duty or Starfield DLC. Hope it’s good because Doom Eternal was fantastic.
