This year’s Assassin’s Creed features an African samurai and a female ninja as protagonists, as the leaked release date is also confirmed.
Some publishers are better at keeping secrets than others and given the huge number of developers they employ, especially in their Canadian studios, it’s not surprising that everything always leaks out about Ubisoft games ahead of time.
Ubisoft themselves managed to leak the November 15 release date of Assassin’s Creed Shadows but it’s also long been rumoured that the game’s two playable characters are an African samurai and a female ninja.
The only real question left for the pre-rendered, cinematic trailer to answer is whether the samurai is based on the real historical figure of Yasuke or if it’s just inspired by him – but in a first for the series you will be playing as a non-fictional character.
What you get up to as him will, obviously, be entirely fictional, although the trailer doesn’t really give much of a clue as to what the overall story is and how it fits in with the rest of the Assassin’s Creed canon.
The other character is entirely made up: a female ninja named Naoe. Both appear to be assassins, so presumably the guy at the end is a Templar.
The game is set in 1579, during the reign of famous daimyō Oda Nobunaga, to whom, in real-life, Yasuke became a retainer (but not a samurai). Nobunaga is famed as the first person to unify Japan as a single nation, although as the trailer shows, that wasn’t by peaceful means.
Although Assassin’s Creed often has two characters, of opposite genders, they’re usually identical in terms of abilities, but Naoe and Yasuke will be completely different, with their own skills, weapons, stats, and progression paths.
As you’d imagine, Naoe is better at stealth and Yasuke is the stronger fighter. It’s not yet clear how much you’re forced to play as one or the other, or if most of the game can be played as your preferred choice.
Building a spy network is an interesting new addition to the franchise, which will apparently be needed to unveil new areas and track targets. It also involves base-building, with a customisable hideout including purely cosmetic additions.
You can also recruit allies with specialised skills to help you, so there are some new features of interest, although the first gameplay trailer won’t be shown until June – presumably at the Ubisoft Forward event.
There’ll be four separate editions of the game, with even the standard edition offering an extra quest if you pre-order. Buy the Gold Edition and you’ll also get the season pass, while the Ultimate Edition includes additional cosmetic items, a photo mode filter, and five skill points.

The Collector’s Edition is the same as the Ultimate Edition, except with a SteelBook, world map, a statue of the two main characters, a life-size katana, a wall scroll, two sumi-e lithographs, and an 84-page artbook. There’s no price yet, but it’s clearly not going to be cheap.
As also leaked before, the game will not be released on last gen formats, and so will only appear on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and Amazon Luna.
If you’re a Ubisoft+ subscriber or buy the Ultimate Edition you can play the game three days earlier, on November 12. Otherwise, you’ll have to wait till November 15.
