Lego’s new Lord of the Rings set is a more than 2-foot-tall model of Sauron’s evil hideout, complete with a light up eye and an orc dungeon.

Have you ever thought about which two buildings The Two Towers was actually referring to? The movie poster implies it’s Orthanc (where Saruman resides) and Barad-dûr (the giant tower with Sauron’s eye atop it) but it’s been a subject of fan debate for decades, since J. R. R. Tolkien only made the name up at the last minute, when his story was split up into three books by the publisher and he had to quickly come up with a title.

The Lord of the Rings has a lot of towers in its lore but the most famous and important is undoubtedly Barad-dûr in Mordor – the home base of the dark lord Sauron. And now it’s available in Lego form and it still manages to look imposing even when it’s made of little plastic bricks.

Made up of 5,471 pieces and standing over 83cm (32.5 inches) tall and 45cm wide the tower is enormous and comes with 10 minifigures and, if you buy it within the first week of it coming out, an exclusive free Fell Beast with a Nazgûl riding it.

Although the model design is based on how Barad-dûr looked in the movies you never actually got to see inside it (the tower Frodo was taken to by the orcs is Cirith Ungol).

That’s allowed Lego’s designers a lot more freedom in how they furnish the interior of Barad-dûr, with a lava-filled dungeon at the bottom, as well as an armoury and forge, and a hiding place for Gollum.

Then there’s a banquet hall, where meat is back on the menu for the residing orcs, and above that Sauron’s throne room, complete with a secret compartment. The towers above that are filled with all sorts of Easter eggs and references, with the Mouth of Sauron’s study and a library with a rotating ladder.

The highlight is undoubtedly the eye of Sauron itself though, which rotates round in multiple directions and has a battery-powered light brick to make the eye glow. The gate at the front is also automated, for when you want to unleash the hordes of Mordor.

On top of that are 10 minifigures, including Sauron himself, the Mouth of Sauron, Frodo, Sam, Gollum, Gothmog, and four other orcs.

The set will become available from June 4 (just in time for Father’s Day) from Lego stores and the Lego website.

Or you can get it from June 1 if you’re a Lego Insider, which you can become by signing up for free here. At £399.99 it’s not cheap, but then there are lot of pieces and minifigures for a licensed set like this.

The Fell Beast set is free if you buy Barad-dûr between June 1 and 7. The dragon-like monster has posable wings and limbs and comes with a Nazgûl minifigure, but after June 7 that’s it – it won’t be available anymore.

Orthanc has already appeared in Lego form but that was over a decade ago now. However, a much more recent Rivendell set is still available and designed with the same exacting level of detail (and with a similarly generous range of minifigures).
