MasterChef viewers were treated to a special surprise on the most recent episode, and it wasn’t of the culinary variety.

Unfortunately, they didn’t figure out how people watching the show could taste the food at the same time as Gregg Wallace and John Torode (we can dream), but instead, the identity of a much-loved part of the BBC series was revealed.

India Fisher has long narrated the series that began in 2004. While her voice has become instantly recognisable to fans, her face is lesser-known, but India was invited to a celebratory dinner leading to screen time.

Her appearance came in a special task given to the remaining competitors to commemorate the series’ 20th anniversary. The semi-finalists of the 20th season were tasked with cooking for 70 guests, who were linked to its history including previous winners, judges and Michelin-star chefs.

The returning stars were treated to a three-course dinner cooked by the eight remaining hopefuls.

Amongst the sea of faces lucky enough to try the cuisine was voiceover artist India, who broke a promise she made to herself.

‘I vowed I wouldn’t do this, but I’ll read the menu out loud,’ she joked.

‘Pan-friend scallop, grilled red mullet, smoked cauliflower pureé, straw potatoes with vinegar powder, fennel and gherkin pickle, scallop coral cracker. Sounds delicious!’

The moment led to viewers flocking to social media to express their delight at her physical debut on the programme.

‘The voice of #MasterChef has a face!!!’ wrote Vicki B. Sanny added: ‘Oh Wow!!! Putting a face to the voice.’

Rhian felt there was a difference in her official voiceover tone, and during the episode: ‘India’s voiceover vs real life is like me on the phone where it’s like Mary Poppins vs Danny Dyer.’ Nicey O’Keeffe agreed, writing: ‘And the voiceover lady sounds nothing at all like the voiceover lady. On brand.’

‘Glad the #Masterchef voiceover got invited to the semi final 20th anniversary meal. Odd to see her face. Had to rewind when I heard her reading the menu and was like hold on a minute I know that voice,’ typed Emmerson.

There was definitely cause for celebration on MasterChef, which first began in 1990, before being relaunched 20 years ago. Since then it has grown to become the world’s biggest television cookery competition and has been made in nearly 70 countries with a total global audience of over one billion people.

The chefs behind the dinner faced hurdles, including an ice-cream machine breaking down, but they were able to overcome it all and delighted diners, who showed their appreciation with a standing ovation.

The group were emotional after their achievement with Brin even remarking: ‘I’m getting married next year and I don’t think it’s going to be as good as today.’

John, 58 said: ‘I’ve got to say, our eight are absolutely magical.’ While Gregg, 59 was equally impressed: ‘One of the best events I can remember, and the ambition on the food from eight amateurs is just extraordinary.’

Unfortunately, the name of the game meant that two people still had to leave – Tom and Cliodhna left the competition with their heads held high, leaving Brin, Chris, Louise, Mary, Abi, and George to continue battling it out in the kitchen.

MasterChef continues Thursday at 9pm on BBC. The episodes are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
