New estimates from one of the big video game analyst group suggests good news for Sony, as the PlayStation Portal does better than expected.
According to their full year financial results, Sony has had a pretty good last 12 months in terms of their PlayStation business. Sales of the PlayStation 5 were within less a million of both their internal goals and the PlayStation 4 at the same point in its lifespan, which is better than many expected.
The concern for Sony is that, at the same time, PlayStation 5 sales are down 29% on last year, which you wouldn’t expect at this point in its life cycle, and means it probably isn’t going to beat the PlayStation 4.
Comparing its success to the Xbox Series X/S is difficult though, as Microsoft stopped reporting sales figures in the Xbox One era. However, estimates from analyst group Niko Partners suggest that the PlayStation 5 shipped 4.5 million units in the last quarter, which is almost five times more than the Xbox Series X/S in the same period.
Shipping is not the same as sold but the PlayStation 5 is not known for shelf-warming, so the actual difference between the two formats in terms of sales should be similar.
According to Sony themselves the PlayStation 5 has sold 59.2 units worldwide during its lifetime (compared to 59.3 million shipped). There’s no official indication of how the Xbox Series X/S has done but separate estimates suggest it’s sold around 28 million consoles – less than half that of Sony.
The closest Microsoft has come to reporting hardware sales figures is acknowledging a 31% drop on the previous year, which is even worse than Sony.
Last year, during its court battle with the FTC, Microsoft admitted to having ‘lost the console wars’ but despite suggestions that they would begin to deemphasise hardware sales in the future, they’ve already implied that a new next gen console will be released in 2026 – something widely believe to resemble the Switch and/or Steam Deck.

So far, Sony hasn’t given any indication of wanting to re-enter the portable console business but apparently demand for the PlayStation Portal has ‘exceeded supply for several months now’ and the device has done ‘better than expected’, according to NPD’s Mat Piscatella.
Piscatella described the sales as ‘Not massive units, but pretty good’, but it does seem to be much better than many were predicting, even though the device cannot run games natively and is only used for streaming games from a PlayStation 5 using Remote Play.
The fact that it costs £199.99 and yet is still doing well, despite its limited functionality, may well influence Sony about its own next gen plans.
