The highly-anticipated Wicked adaptation just dropped the full-length trailer, as lead stars Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo welcome us into Oz.

Wicked: Part 1, directed by Jon M. Chu, is set to come out in November featuring an all star cast.

This includes: popstar Ariana as Glinda the Good, West End icon Cynthia as Elphaba, Bridgerton’s Jonathan Bailey as Fiyero, Oscar winner Michelle Yu as Madame Morrible and Hollywood star Jeff Goldblum as the mythic wizard of Oz himself.

The Wizard of Oz origin story traces the unconventional friendship between Elphaba, a witch outcast due to her green-coloured skin, and the most popular witch in school Glinda.

As Elphaba faces persecution from every side, she strikes up a powerful romantic connection with the dashing Fiyero andher impressive powers are noticed by the mysterious Madame Morrible.

The classic Broadway production is littered with memorable musical theatre songs such as Deying Gravity, For Good and The Wizard and I and they are all coming to the big screen in magnificent technicolour alongside a handful of original tunes.

The trailer starts with a look at the infamous black witch’s hat that becomes a defining feature of Elphaba’s future costume.

As we progress, we see the painful first meeting between Glinda and Elphaba who are forced to share a room. Ariana embodies Glinda’s overnethusiastic charm beautifully as she strives to transform Elphaba and make her ‘popular’.

There are bright pinks, gorgeous rainbow hues, and the jawdropping otherwordly-sets all created by Chu and the wider production team and shot in London in order to make Oz more real than ever.

When Elphaba is called to the Wizard, the duo travel through multi-coloured fields of flowers before arriving in the dazzling Emerald City.

The trailer also offers our first proper glimpse at Jeff as the wizard and Jonathan as the handsome Fiyero as Glinda and Elphaba get caught up in a Oz-wide conspiracy.

The trailer ends with Elphaba taking hold off her broom and dramatiucally bursting through the window.

Ariana and Cynthia’s chemsitry shone through in the trailer, playing off each other’s wit and showing off the deeper bond they form as the plot progresses.

Meanwhile, contrary to prior concerns that the film would be too dark-lit, the upcoming film has promised vibrant landscapes and breathtaking acting from the A-List cast.

Fans recently got to watch Ariana and Cynthia’s tear-filled reactions to finding out they landed the role in an emotional behind-the-scenes video. Both stars opened up about how much this movie meant to them.

As Broadway’s original Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth gave her stamp of approval on Arian’s casting – for whom the role is a childhood dream.

‘She’s going to put her own stamp on it. I’m so proud of her,’ Kristin said at the time. ‘I wanted her to do her Glinda. And that’s what she’s doing. I’m proud of her.’

Wicked: Part 1 arrives on the big screen on November 27, 2024.
