The newest trailer for Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been met with both excitement and disapproval from fans, but is racism a factor?
A day after Ubisoft accidentally leaked the release date for the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows, the cinematic trailer for its 14th major instalment in the action role-playing series was premiered.
The trailer confirms the rumours that there will be two main protagonists, an African samurai and a female ninja, although there’s still little information about the wider plot of the game.
Those details had leaked ahead of time too and so Assassin’s Creed fans rushed to social media to give their take on the cinematic trailer and there is already a lot of negativity surrounding the fact that one of the lead characters is black.
In less than 24 hours the cinematic trailer of Assassin’s Creed Shadows had been watched over 4 million times on Ubisoft’s YouTube channel, with 206,000 likes and 267,000 dislikes.
This seems hard to credit given it’s an inoffensive cinematic trailer that shows no gameplay and is really only meant as a prelude to the full reveal in June, at the Ubisoft Forward event.
There’s little in the way of substantial criticism, or praise, in the comment section, with Eroyaji saying, ‘So it’s Ubisoft making their own Ghost Of Tsushima with bigger budget, but way smaller brains.’
That makes little sense given that Ghost Of Tsushima, which is also set in historical Japan, was a big budget first party game that is very similar to early era Assassin’s Creed games.
‘You know that feeling you get when you’re waiting for a new Assassin’s Creed game… and sudden urge to play? I don’t have it,’ says Arseny Kudryavtsev, without specifying why.
YouTube filters out overtly racist remarks but there are numerous comments regarding the fact that the first game set in Japan stars an African man in the lead role.
The laughably bad dialogue in the game hasn’t helped either, with many referring to the line where Yasuke says, ‘We are the shadows’ while wearing full ceremonial armour.
Yasuke was a real person but there’s debate over whether he was an actual samurai, which is already poisoning the discussion further.
Given gaming is often at the forefront of culture wars on the internet the whole situation seems highly regrettable, especially as there’s no meaningful discussion that can be had about the game at the moment.

However, there is also general discontent with Ubisoft’s attitude towards never really owning the games you buy and numerous recommendations not to pre-order.
‘In the eyes of Ubisoft Execs, this is a $70+ rental,’ says Wyattinous.
All of this is very predictable, with the top-rated comment at time of writing being from user-vg8ox3he1i, who says: ‘The most heroic thing about this trailer is that they left the comments open.’
