The first official trailer for It Ends With Us has been released, sparking a wave of criticism from film fans.
The flick stars Blake Lively as florist Lily Bloom, opposite Justin Baldoni’s Ryle Kincaid in the big screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel of the same name.
In the first look footage, set to Taylor Swift’s My Tears Ricochet, the pair are seen falling deeply in love – but it becomes apparent that all is not as it seems behind closed doors.
As they grow closer, Ryle’s violent behavior is unveiled and he continues to abuse Lily – whose first love, Atlas, walks back into the picture, completely upending their relationship.
‘We all have an idea of what love can be,’ Blake’s character shares in a voiceover. ‘That special connection you feel, that first kiss.
‘But 15 seconds, that’s all it takes to completely change everything.’

It Ends With Us is due to be released in August – Jenny Slate, Hasan Minhaj, Amy Morton and Brandon Sklenar make up the rest of the cast, while Justin is also serving as director.
However, many on social media have slammed the trailer, calling out the depiction of abuse and criticizing the use of a love triangle trope.
Flocking to Twitter, Deadfilmz fumed: ‘Love triangles don’t hit when one of the men is an abuser I’m afraid.’
Persephenphone shared: ‘I’ve never prayed on a movie’s downfall so bad.’

Moniza Hossain agreed: ‘I have not read the book, so is the guy dramatically throwing things to the beat of the sound track physically abusing his wife, because this is a very questionable way of depicting spousal abuse.’
A Twitter user known only as Kate penned: ‘I cannot properly explain to you how much I detest every single thing about this.’
Mcumagik replied: ‘A love triangle… but one of the guys is violent and abusive? Wtf.’
While many, many more claimed that the two-and-a-half minute-long trailer gave away the majority of the movie.

Colleen first released It Ends With Us in 2016 and it surged in popularity on social media – but has been described as ‘toxic’ by some readers.
It sparked a 2022 sequel, It Starts With Us, which follows on from where the first book left off.
The official synopsis for the movie reads: ‘It Ends With Us, the first Colleen Hoover novel adapted for the big screen, tells the compelling story of Lily Bloom (Blake Lively), a woman who overcomes a traumatic childhood to embark on a new life in Boston and chase a lifelong dream of opening her own business.
‘A chance meeting with charming neurosurgeon Ryle Kincaid (Justin Baldoni) sparks an intense connection, but as the two fall deeply in love, Lily begins to see sides of Ryle that remind her of her parents’ relationship.

‘When Lily’s first love, Atlas Corrigan (Brandon Sklenar), suddenly reenters her life, her relationship with Ryle is upended, and Lily realizes she must learn to rely on her own strength to make an impossible choice for her future.’
Justin, most known for his role as Rafael in Jane the Virgin, has been working on the project for the past few years, and was praised by author Coleen for maintaining ‘the essence of this book in a delicate and beautiful way’.
‘The readers are the reason this book has been adapted, and I appreciate how much Justin wants to make sure those readers get the movie they deserve,’ she told People Magazine.
‘I’m confident they’ll be happy with what has been created.’
It Ends With Us is slated to be released on August 9.
