The long-awaited new GTA sequel is still well over a year away but it hasn’t slipped into 2026 says the owner of Rockstar Games.
It still doesn’t have an exact release date, but we now know for a fact that GTA 6 is aiming to be out sometime in autumn 2025. Many had been hoping for a spring release but with rumours of a delay it certainly could’ve been worse news.
The confirmation came as part of Take-Two Interactive’s full year financial report, in which they also revealed that GTA 5 has passed the 200 million sales mark, confirming it as easily the best-selling traditional video game ever made and behind only Minecraft.
That total is almost half that of the sales for the entire Grand Theft Auto franchise, with the game now having been released for three generations in a row, thanks to the ongoing popularity of GTA Online.
An exact release date for GTA 6 may be revealed in the next trailer, which in turn may debut at one of the various not-E3 preview showcases in June (or the PlayStation one rumoured for May).
Take-Two won’t be too concerned when the game comes out though, as long as it’s before the end of their next financial year in March 2026 – so Rockstar won’t necessarily be in any hurry to reveal more at the moment.
Like most publishers, Take-Two recently laid off hundreds of developers and cancelled a number of unnamed projects.
As a result, the only new games they confirmed for the next financial year, beyond GTA 6, were NBA 2K25 and WWE 2K25.

However, they did reveal that a new entry in one of its ‘biggest and most beloved franchises’ would be announced at Summer Game Fest on June 7.
They gave no hint as to what franchise they were referring to, but there have been rumours of a new Mafia game being announced this year – although whether anyone would describe the Mafia franchise in quite those terms is open for debate.
Borderlands 4 seems a better fit for Take-Two’s hyperbole, as while the company only recently bought developer Gearbox it has published all of the previous titles.
A new Bioshock game also seems an outside chance, but while one has been in development hell for several years nothing has ever been said or revealed about it.
