Adam Sandler will reprise his role as hockey player turned star golfer in a Netflix sequel of the beloved sports movie. But not everyone is happy.

The 1996 film, in which Sandler played the titular character, followed the prone-to-violence Happy as he joins a golf tournament in order to save his grandmother’s (Frances Bay) home from getting sold off.

The Universal Pictures film, co-written by Just Go With It actor Sandler, 57, starred the late Carl Weathers as former pro golfer Chubbs and Modern Family actor Julie Bowen as PR director Virginia Venit.

Ben Stiller also made a cameo in an uncredited role as an evil residential home manager and Christopher McDonald featured as arch golfing rival Shooter McGavin.

Happy Gilmore was a commercial success with a joyous ending for Happy and his grandmother, but now the foul-mouthed swinger is making a grand return to the screen almost three decades on for more shenanigans.

After years of speculation online that Happy might return, the streaming service confirmed the news on Wednesday.

Rumours of the sequel first resurged in March after McDonald shared a recent run-in with the Hollywood star in which Sandler whipped out a first draft of the long awaited follow up film.

‘It’s in the works. Fans demand it, damn it!,’ he said.

When asked about the sequel on the Dan Patrick Show on April 3, Sandler said: ‘We love Happy Gilmore, we don’t want to let anybody down. People have talked to me about this for many years. We’re going to work hard and make sure it’s good.’

Beyond the bare bones, very little has been confirmed. There is currently no indication if any more of the cast will make a return, or what the actual plot of the sequel would consist of which has left fans conflicted.

‘This will either be absolute peak or the worst movie you’ve ever seen, no in between,’ @stop_hammerzeit wrote.

‘There’s no way they can top the original but I’ll still be watching day one,’ another user @harvv added.

Some are saying that Happy Gilmore’s legacy should be left alone.

‘Leave a classic in the past… only a handful of sequels have been good,’ @jason23lake posted.

‘People will tell themselves “it’s great/fantastic/excellent”, but it won’t live up to those expectations. Hope I’m wrong,’ @robbie_j shared.

Elsewhere, fans speculated that the film would simply not be the same without the stars who have died since the original came out, including Weathers, media personality Bob Barker (who appeared as himself in the film), and comedian Joe Flaherty.

The sequel announcement is the latest in a string of classic 90s and 00s films getting the sequel and/or revival treatment.

The Princess Diaries, Legally Blonde, Mamma Mia, and Sylvester Stallone’s Cliffhanger are just a handful of the movies on the cards to make a big-screen return.

Happy Gilmore is available to stream on Netflix US.
