Fan favourite twerking emotes have now been reinstated on Twitch, after they were originally removed for being too edgy.

Twitch is constantly changing its rules on the go, especially when it comes to anything sexually suggestive, like the trend earlier this year when streamers found a loophole in the guidelines and pretended to appear naked via deceptive camera angles.

In 2021 the streaming platform went so far as to ban emotes that depicted the twerking dance move, made famous by Miley Cyrus so many years ago.

Fans weren’t happy about it but now, three years later, Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has confirmed that the twerking emotes are again being allowed.

‘We’re adjusting our approach and bringing our emotes guidelines more in line with the rest of our community guidelines,’ Clancy says in a recent patch update broadcast.

‘So in particular, emotes that feature shaking butts, commonly referred to as twerking – but we’ll just call them shaking butts – are now permitted under our guidelines.’

The initial ban of twerking emotes in 2021 caused backlash from streamers and viewers, with one content creator criticising Twitch for deleting his emote while hot tubs streams – people broadcasting themselves wearing bikinis in hot tubs and inflatable pools – were still allowed.

Twitch is still being cautious about allowing potentially incendiary content on its platform though, as the recent patch update also states that emotes featuring sexual content, nudity, drugs, and politics are still not allowed.

While most will welcome the return of the emotes Twitch’s lack of consistency and their tendency to ban things at a moment’s notice, and with no explanation, continues to infuriate many fans.
