Season three of Bridgerton has finally arrived on Netflix – so naturally, fans have had to update themselves on period drama lingo.
Stepping away from Julia Quinn’s novels, the third instalment focuses on the friendship-turned-romance between Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan) and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).
After a four-year wait for these two friends to finally act on their feelings for one another, fans are certainly in for a passionate treat!
That isn’t the only romance that Lady Whistledown (the secret pen name of Penelope) is gossiping about across the ton, with Anthony Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley) having just returned from their love-filled honeymoon.
Francesca Bridgerton (Hannah Dodd), the third sister in the Bridgerton clan, has also just made her entrance in the ton as she embarks on the path of finding a husband, despite her preference for quiet solitude.
Speaking of the ‘ton’ – what does it mean?
What does the ‘ton’ mean in Bridgerton?
The ton is a term originating in the 1800s and was used to describe high-society London. The word is short for ‘le bon ton,’ which means good manners.

From the costume to the show’s dialect, Bridgerton certainly exudes sophistication.
Characters are referred to as the ‘talk of the ton’, which essentially translates to them being the toast of high society, with an intense spotlight on their elegance, wealth, and class.
Indeed, this detail mirrors the real-life Regency era too, as the term was often used among the types of groups portrayed in Bridgerton.
How many Bridgerton books are there?
The Netflix series is based on the eight books by Julia Quinn.

Each novel focuses on a different Bridgerton sibling: Daphne, Anthony, Benedict, Colin, Eloise, Francesca, Hyacinth, and Gregory.
The first book, titled The Duke and I, tells the story of Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Basset, played by Phoebe Dynevor and Regé-Jean Page, respectively in the first season of the Netflix show.
The popular programme provides a fascinating insight into what life in the English capital may have been like at that time (with the added orchestral accompaniment of Ariana Grande and Taylor Swift).
Where is Bridgerton filmed?
Filming for the globally-beloved series takes place in several locations around the UK, including Buckinghamshire, Bath and Greenwich.

Where is Bridgerton house?
The exterior of the Bridgerton house is filmed at Ranger’s House in Greenwich, while some of the interiors of the home were actually created at the Royal Air Force station RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire.
It’s believed that the Featherington house hails from Bath, with other shots of the house being filmed at Hatfield House in Hertfordshire.
Meanwhile, Lady Danbury’s sprawling property is actually The Holburne Museum in Bath in real life, which should come as no surprise for a woman of her stature in society.
Bridgerton is available to stream on Netflix.
