Emma Stone couldn’t help but beam as a reporter asked her a question at Cannes Film Festival, simply because he used her real name.

She was with Yorgos Lanthimos promoting their new film Kinds of Kindness — their fifth one together — at the historic festival.

‘So, Emily how-,’ the reporter asked before the director corrected ‘Emma’, to which the 35-year-old actor explained: ‘My name is Emily.’

The Cruella star thanked the interviewer for using her real name, beaming from ear to ear as she laughed and added: ‘Very nice.’

When she was beginning her career there was another actress already using the name Emily Stone registered to the Screen Actor’s Guild (SAG).

As a solution, the Superbad icon made her professional name Emma Stone instead and has been going by the wrong name ever since; for 20 years.

During her Oscar speech in 2019, Olivia Colman thanked her The Favourite co-stars but confused everyone as she said ‘Emily and Rachel’.

‘When I get to know them, people that I work with do,’ Emma explained to The Hollywood Reporter last month about who actually calls her Emily.

She added: ‘I freaked out a couple of years ago. For some reason, I was like, “I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.”’

During this interview the Amazing Spiderman actress said she would like to be called by her real name if possible but doesn’t mind either name.

Her Poor Things co-star Mark Ruffalo sweetly responded to a tweet about the decision and wrote: ‘Okay. We love you, Emily.’

Last month she revealed she had to pick a different name for SAG (Picture: Stephane Cardinale – Corbis/Corbis via Getty Images)

While Yorgos, 50, has worked with the Easy A icon on five films now he was clearly unaware of the name swap.

Kinds of Kindness is the follow up to their Oscar winning movie and promises to be even more wild with some seriously graphic scenes.

It involves bodily mutilation, animal cruelty, even Emily serving up her fried chopped-off finger and a bout of vigorous group sex in its three films tied together loosely by a theme.

Instead of one film, Yorgos decided to make the story into three movies tied together with the first set to debut in June.

The cast also includes Willem Dafoe, Jesse Plemons, Joe Alwyn, Hong Chau and Margaret Qualley.

Kinds of Kindness hits cinemas in the UK on June 28, 2024.
