Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree – what is Miquella up to? (Bandai Namco)

The new trailer for the keenly awaited Elden Ring DLC expansion looks amazing but it does have any clear answers for what exactly is going on.

Amazing boss battles, incredible artwork, and intricate level design are all things you’d expect of a new FromSoftware game, but transparent storytelling is certainly not.

Before all the wikis and YouTube explanations appeared it was very difficult to understand what was going on in Elden Ring and it’s certain to be the same with its DLC expansion Shadow Of The Erdtree, which is out on June 21.

There’s been next to no explanation so far, except that it seems to centre around Malenia’s brother Miquella, who is only briefly featured in the main game. The trailer above confirms this but doesn’t make it clear what else is happening.

To make things worse, the music towards the end of the trailer almost completely drowns out the dialogue, but if you put on subtitles you can more clearly understand what is being said.

It’s probably best not to take anything for granted but the trailer shows Miquella being up and about, and not stuck inside the mysterious egg they’re found in while playing the main game.

What’s being shown seems to have happened a long time ago though, with talk of ‘seduction and betrayal’ an ‘An affair from which gold arose and so too was shadow born.’

Gold is no doubt a reference to Miquella’s Golden lineage and the Golden Order, with Miquella attempting to rid themselves of the former by abandoning their physical form (which explains why the limp arm hanging out of the egg).

New (or rather old) character Messmer appears to be taking the villain role. But while such positions are never clearcut in From games he certainly seems to be in opposition to Miquella. It’s also implied that Miquella will be your guide in the game, while Messmer hunts Tarnished.

Apart from some shots at the end, of what are either new characters or, more probably, representations of random Tarnished, that’s it for the so-called story trailer.

While the trailer doesn’t really seem to contain much new information, we already know that the DLC will take place in the Land of Shadow, which is apparently an entirely new world.

It seems possible that at least part of the expansion will be played in the past although, again, it’s not clear and probably never will be until people can start playing the DLC and going through the item descriptions that provide most of the background lore.
