Despite concerns that they might be next on Microsoft’s chopping block, it’s claimed that Ninja Theory is now working on two separate games.
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2 is out today and has predictably got mixed reviews, but no matter what you think of the game the primary concern is the future of developer Ninja Theory, considering what has already happened to the makers of Hi-Fi Rush and Redfall.
Earlier this month, Microsoft was reportedly already saying that it was not sure Hellblade 2 would be a ‘success’ even if it became a multiformat release, which does not bode well for the future of Ninja Theory.
Although there is apparently much disagreement within Microsoft, as to their general policy and the fate of their various developers, the latest suggestion is that not only is Ninja Theory safe but that they are currently working on two new games.
We didn’t like either Hellblade game but in terms of graphics and presentation both titles are exceptional, especially given that they were created by a team of only around 80 people.
That seems almost impossible given the hundreds, sometimes thousands, involved in other games that only look half as good, and while the compromise is that the games are less than eight hours long that’s still an achievement that Microsoft should reward and expand upon.
Whatever you think of Hellblade, the lack of promotion for the sequel has been very noticeable but a report from Windows Central claims that the studio is actually working on two titles: the previously announced Project Mara and another brand new game.
Project Mara was first mentioned back in 2020, two years after Microsoft bought Ninja Theory, but it’s never been clear what it is, with only vague talk of ‘new ways of storytelling’ and attempts ‘to recreate the horrors of the mind as accurately and realistically as possible’.
The implication is that it’s some kind of horror game but whatever it is, it seems to have the same photorealistic style graphics as Hellblade.

There’s no clue at all as to what the unannounced game is, but supposedly, ‘There are no plans whatsoever to close the studio any time soon.’
It seems possible that the third game is Hellblade 3 but, unlike the first title, the sequel doesn’t necessarily hint at another game – although that doesn’t mean it couldn’t happen anyway.
