An old interview of Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs speaking about domestic violence has emerged in the wake of footage showing him assaulting his ex-girlfriend.

Last week surveillance footage from 2016 showed the rapper physically assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura, kicking, dragging, and then throwing an object at her.

A few days on, a clip of him on The Ellen Show has been re-shared on social media.

In 2009 Diddy sat down with the talk show host not long after his friend Chris Brown had been accused of assaulting his then-girlfriend Rihanna in a car before the Grammys.

‘I would like you to clear something up because there’s a lot of talk going on with Chris Brown being at your place in Miami, and you arranging Chris and Rihanna getting back together,’ she began as he started making nervous noises.

‘Now, uh, do you want to talk about that?’ she questioned.

‘You see I wouldn’t use my Twitter to talk about that, because that is somebody else’s business,’ he began.

After Ellen pointed out how he had offered up his house to give them a space to reconcile, Diddy tried to turn the conversation back to not wanting to speak about the matter on social media, to which Ellen replied: ‘Ok well let’s talk about it.’

‘There’s clearly a lot of people wondering why you would do that and give Chris, a guy who hit a girl…I just don’t understand it?’ she said.

After saying he could offer up his house to whoever he liked, Diddy said he wasn’t someone to ‘cast a stone or judgment on anybody’ and would ‘be a friend in hard times’.

But Ellen then said: ‘I don’t want any girl out there thinking it’s OK to go back to a guy who hit her’.

After the audience started clapping, she told Diddy: ‘And I don’t mean to put you in it. Because it’s not you…’

However, Diddy then said Ellen had in fact ‘put [him] in it,’ so he felt compelled to ‘speak on it’.

‘I don’t think it’s right for anybody to hit anybody,’ he began.

‘I think we all have to be honest with ourselves as adults, and people who have been in relationships,’ he continued.

‘We know sometimes those relationships get ugly, and sometimes it doesn’t come out to the forefront the way this one has come out.’

He added: ‘There’s a lot of stones being thrown, and we don’t know exactly what happened.’

The rapper said people needed to ‘pray and provide support’ for the young couple and went on to tell Ellen she ‘wasn’t in the car’, so shouldn’t comment on what happened.

‘It isn’t right for him to put her hands on her, or her to put her hands on him. We don’t know what the problem is, but we need to pray for them. And we need to do things to support them and that’s all I want to say about it. Thank you.’

After Ellen suggested they then jump to an ad break, he asked if they could dance and jumped out of his seat.

The resurfaced interview comes after the CCTV footage of Diddy assaulting Cassie inside a hotel in 2016 was leaked.

Last year Cassie also filed a lawsuit in which she claimed he had subjected her to more than a decade of coercion by physical force and drugs when they were in a relationship.

The lawsuit alleged he beat her, plied her with drugs, forced her to have sex with male sex workers and also raped her.

A day after it was filed, the claims were settled ‘to their mutual satisfaction’, with Diddy’s lawyer denying any wrongdoing on his behalf.

This weekend the rapper also posted an apology video on social media, saying his behaviour in the hotel footage was ‘inexcusable’ and he was ‘disgusted’ and had ‘sought out professional help’ after the incident.

He then said although he was ‘not asking for forgiveness’, he had ‘committed to be a better man each and every day’.
