BBC fans have already devoured the latest must-see detective drama Rebus, and are frothing at the mouth for season 2.

Ian Rankin’s literary classic has been adapted again after Race Across The World narrator and Hollywood legend John Hannah starred as the detective for one cycle on ITV, later recast with Ken Scott taking over for three seasons.

As far as British crime dramas go, it was a pretty forgettable take on an exceptional series of books.

Thankfully, the BBC has revived interest in Rankin’s inspector, with another shot at making John Rebus one of the most celebrated UK TV detectives like he deserves.

Starring Outlander’s Richard Rankin in the titular role, the six episodes follow John Rebus as he’s pulled into Edinburgh’s muddy underworld and unwittingly thrown into conflict with a criminal gang that turns personal.

We Are Lady Parts actress Lucie Shorthouse, The Icpress Files’ Brian Ferguson and Torchwood’s Amy Manson also star.

It feels fresh, gritty and viewers think it’s a huge step up from the 00s ITV series.

Liz McVey wrote on X: ‘I was worried about watching but it’s so good…can’t help but think Rebus will be delighted with how he used to look. Definitely more please.’

‘Half way and loving it. Richard Rankin is a brilliant Rebus. Hope there is a series 2 & more,’ Teresa McCallion pleaded with the BBC.

Gareth Lewis went one step further to ask: ‘Could I please request that my @BBC TV License fee for the next 10 years is spent on Series 2 of @Beathhigh Rebus. By far one of the best series I have seen in years. Thank you.’

Emma agreed, adding: ‘I thought that it was the best incarnation of Rebus we’ve had.’

And praise for the new adaptation appeared to be universal with almost everyone on social media confirming it’s been a huge success.

As it stands, however, there is no sign of a second series but with viewers flocking to binge Rebus it seems likely there will be more episodes to come.

Rebus is available to stream on BBC iPlayer now.
