Train bassist Charlie Colin has died aged 58 after falling in the shower.

The bassist’s mother confirmed his death to TMZ and said he slipped and fell in the shower while house-sitting for a friend in Brussels, Belgium.

She said it was unclear exactly when the accident happened as he had been alone in the house.

Colin’s body was found by his friends when they returned from their trip five days later.

Paying tribute, his mother called him a ‘beautiful human being.’

Colin founded San Francisco band Train in 1993 along with frontman Pat Monahan, Rob Hotchkiss, Jimmy Stafford and Scott Underwood.

Train achieved success with their self-titled debut album in 1998, with the lead track, Meet Virginia, becoming a top 20 hit in the US.

Other singles, Free and I Am, followed cementing Train as one of the hottest new bands and bringing them national fame.

In 2001, the group released the lead track of their second album, both called Drops of Jupiter. The song became a massive hit and spent 54 weeks on the US charts.

It went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song and the Grammy Award for Best Arrangement.

Meanwhile, the album became Train’s first top 10 album in the US – and also peaked at number 8 in the UK charts.

To date, Train has produced 11 studio albums, with the most recent, AM Gold, released in 2022.

Train’s other well-known songs include Hey, Soul Sister and Drive By.

Colin was forced to leave Train in 2003 due to substance issues.

In a 2017 interview with NBC, Pat said he gave the band an ultimatum – and told them to choose between himself or Colin.

He recalled: ‘Charlie is one incredible bass player, but he was in a lot of pain, and the way he was dealing with it was very painful for everyone else around him.’

Discussing his bandmate’s choice, Pat said: ‘They weren’t happy about the choice. They were very clear that I put them in a very tough position.’

Before his death, Colin had moved to Brussels where he was teaching a music master class at a conservatory.

He was also working at a studio and finishing making music for a film.
