Darryl Hickman, a former child star who appeared in films including the 1940 release of Grapes of Wrath, has died at the age of 92.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, an announcement was made by the late actor’s family online in an obituary.

It was said that Hickman – who starred in the movie Leave Her To Heaven in 1945, as well as several episodes of the 1990s TV series The Nanny – died on Wednesday in Montecito, California.

Born in Hollywood in 1931, Hickman’s first film role came in 1937 in The Prisoner of Zenda, after he signed a contract with Paramount. His younger brother, Dwayne Hickman, died in 2022 aged 87.

A couple of years later, he bagged his role as Winfield Joad in The Grapes of Wrath, which was based on the novel of the same name and was nominated for seven Oscars, winning two for Best Director and Best Supporting Actress.

The film is widely regarded as one of the greatest of all time, and also stars Henry Fonda and Jane Darwell among the cast.

He went on to star in movies including Men of Boys Town and The Human Comedy, both with Mickey Rooney, in the 1940s.

Then in 1945, he was cast in the film Leave Her To Heaven, a psychological thriller.

In the 1950s, Hickman briefly stepped away from the world of acting, briefly retiring to enter a monastery, before returning a month later.
