Doctor Who just dropped its latest episode and fans cannot get enough of Millie Gibson’s awe-inspiring performance as companion Ruby Sunday.

The new season of the British sci-fi series – starring Ncuti Gatwa as the fifteenth Doctor – has already seen the Doctor and Ruby meet the dinosaurs, encounter space babies and almost lose their nerve in the middle of a live battlefield.

Now the fourth episode, 73 Yards, has shifted gears to full-on folk horror as Ruby Sunday is forced to unravel a mystery in rural Wales after the Doctor vanishes.

As Ruby faces up to an ancient legend, a mystery woman stands 73 yards away and Roger ap Gwilliam (Aneurin Barnard), a Welsh nuclear despot.

The 40-minute sci-fi extravaganza showcased Millie’s onscreen gravitas and ability to helm the show without the support of the Doctor – an essential attribute for any onboard assistant.

The episode also featured an appearance from Michelle Greenidge as Ruby’s mum Carla in a heart-wrenching performance and saw the return of Jemma Redgrave as UNIT leader Kate Lethbridge-Stewart.

Whovians have already taken to X to praise Millie on her stand-out acting and ‘performance for the ages’ inside what is being called one of the ‘best episodes’ ever.

‘Maybe the best companion performance ever,’ X user analysingDW posted.

‘Millie Gibson is amazing as Ruby Sunday. Superstar,’ kingofsunshine echoed.

‘It’s up there with Blink as one of the most bizarre yet epic #DoctorWho episodes of all time, Millie Gibson smashed it , playing two different games with ease too,’ StattoSi said.

Millie, 19, took to Instagram in an emotional message to talk about her experience creating the episode that has put her on the Doctor Who map.

’73 yards was the very first script I read for our series of Doctor Who,’ she explained.

‘I remember closing it and re-reading it again straight away. It has such a special place in my heart; I didn’t know Ruby, I didn’t know what her story was going to entail, and I didn’t know anyone at Doctor Who either.

‘During filming this episode, I experienced everything for the first time that Ruby was experiencing too. I grew and learnt so much as an actress and as a person. When I watch this episode, I feel such a sense of fulfilment and joy.’

Doctor Who returns with episode five Dot and Bubble on Saturday June 1 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
