The publisher of NBA 2K and WWE 2K is allegedly the new owner of the FIFA licence and intends to release a new game this year.
EA no longer making FIFA games would’ve seemed unfathomable a few years ago but from their point of view the segue from FIFA 23 to EA Sports 24 has gone very smoothly, with sales up 25% despite the change in name.
The reason they gave up the FIFA licence is that FIFA itself was asking for too much money and in reality all you get for the $1 billion fee is the right to use the name and including the World Cup in your game.
EA decided it wasn’t worth it, but FIFA immediately insisted they’d get someone else to make games instead. The only publisher that’s ever been mentioned seriously in connection with such a deal is Take-Two Interactive and it seems they may now have signed the licence.
Take-Two’s involvement has been rumoured for months, from various sources, but the latest suggestion comes from retailer Mohplay, which confidently exclaims that, ‘2K has secured the official license from FIFA to create the next FIFA video game!’
It offers no proof of this and it’s not clear whether the tweet was published early by mistake or if someone has gone crazy with the company’s Twitter account.
‘The partnership is confirmed, and 2K will be developing a new football game series,’ says the tweet. ‘FIFA 2K25 is set to launch this year, just in time for the FIFA World Cup 2K26!’
Although it’s impossible to know exactly what was going on behind the scenes, the first rumours of EA ditching the FIFA licence only came about in late 2021.
Even if 2K put caution to the wind (which isn’t like them) and started development that moment, that’s still an incredibly short amount of time to make a complex sports simulator.
There seems to be three obvious explanations: their developers have been burning the midnight oil and the rumour is true, the rumour is a complete lie, or there’s been some kind of misunderstanding.

It’s long been rumoured that 2K is also working with Lego on a family friendly football game, as a follow-up to their previous release Lego 2K Drive.
It’d be much believable if that was coming out this year instead, especially as promotional material and an age listing appeared for it last year and then there was mysteriously no actual announcement.
Or maybe 2K are just throwing caution to the wind and FIFA 2K25 really is coming out this year. They certainly would want to take advantage of the World Cup, because that’s the one key advantage they have over EA, but the risks of making a poor first impression are considerable.
