The latest Resident Evil remake rumours claim that 1 and 5 are off the menu but that Code: Veronica and Zero are happening.

With multiple preview showcases due to take place in June (and maybe even May, if PlayStation are going to announce theirs at the last minute) the internet is filling up with leaks and rumours about what they might involve.

We’ve already had some in-fighting between Resident Evil leakers, over whether or not a Resident Evil 1 remake is underway, but a new rumour, from the source that claims it’s not, suggests that Capcom is instead prepping remakes of Resident Evil Zero and CODE: Veronica.

That’s despite the fact that Capcom has previous implied they would not be remaking the former Dreamcast exclusive, although in this case fans will be delighted if they’ve changed their mind.

Publishers can often be flexible with the truth when it comes to hinting at future projects but despite AestheticGamer aka Dusk Golem being the most trusted leaker for Resident Evil, and horror games in general, he makes no reference to a 2022 comment in which Resident Evil 4 remake producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said there were no current plans to redo CODE: Veronica.

There’s also the rather obvious problem that, in terms of story, CODE: Veronica takes place before Resident Evil 4, so it really should have come first.

Although it doesn’t have a number at the end of its name, Resident Evil fans will know that CODE: Veronica is actually the real Resident Evil 3 and it’s the PS1 game which is the superfluous spin-off, with Sony using their influence to make sure they had the numbered exclusive and not Sega.

CODE: Veronica has little connection to Resident Evil 4, which at the time was essentially a soft reboot, but it is a direct sequel to Resident Evil 2 and has a lot of lore that’s important to the franchise.

It was also the first entry in the series to begin to ditch the fixed camera angles of the original, so it is odd that Capcom didn’t remake it first and then Resident Evil 4.

Dusk Golem doesn’t comment on any of this, merely saying that he first heard about the remake over a year ago and that Resident Evil Zero is also getting the same treatment.

Resident Evil Zero was released the same year as the original Resident Evil 1 remake and was clearly an attempt by Capcom to make back the money they spent on what was at the time a GameCube exclusive.

It used the same hi-end pre-rendered graphics and was partially set in the same mansion location as Resident Evil 1. It was fine but easily missable, even though it’s chronologically the first entry in the series – if only by a few hours.

All this is confusing enough, although easy to believe if you imagine that the remakes have all proven much more popular than Capcom expected and so they don’t now want to miss an opportunity.

Nevertheless, Dusk Golem once again insists there are currently no plans for a new Resident Evil 1 remake or the more vaguely rumoured Resident Evil 5 remake.

He also claims that Resident Evil 9 will not be announced this summer and that the game has been pushed back to late 2025 or 2026, despite previously suggesting it could be out as early as January 2025.

Capcom is at Summer Game Fest though and did announce new games last year at the Xbox Games Showcase, and later their own event, so there is a good chance something will be unveiled next month – even if there’s no guarantee it will be Resident Evil related.
