One of the most recognizable homes in movie history is officially on the market – and could be yours for just $5.25million.

The house from Home Alone, the 1990 Christmas classic starring Macaulay Culkin, Catherine O’Hara, Joe Pesci and John Candy, has been listed for sale on Zillow.

The five-bedroom, six-bathroom property, located in the Winnetka area of Chicago, Illinois, was actually used as the exterior for the film – and the 1992 sequel – but looks hugely different from when Kevin McCallister turned it into his own house of horrors to capture burglars Harry and Marv.

Gone are any traces of his dastardly traps, the awkwardly-placed statue in the driveway, that creepy tarantula or that red and green wallpaper adorning all the walls.

Instead, the previous owners renovated the entire place in 2018, with a tasteful monochrome color scheme throughout – Katie Moor of Coldwell Banker is currently listing the property.

And what do you get for the whopping $5.25million price tag? Well, quite a lot actually…

As well as being able to own a piece of cinema gold dust, buyers can enjoy a ‘gracious foyer,’ with an ‘inviting’ back garden – housing a huge porch and a wood-burning fireplace overlooking the gigantic yard.

They also get not one, but two living rooms, as well as two laundry rooms and a heated garage with space for three cars.

The primary bedroom includes a fireplace, a walk-in closet and a dreamy ensuite, with a giant freestanding tub and separate sinks – meaning tenants can copy Kevin McCallister’s iconic shaving routine in peace.

While the basement in the gym housed that creepy furnace in the movie, in real life it has been replaced by a gym, a movie theater, bathroom and indoor sports court.

Basically, loads of hiding spaces if Harry and Marv ever pop by unannounced again.

‘A legendary holiday dream home, reimagined for modern-day luxury: The stately brick Georgian residence of Home Alone fame brings forward a rare opportunity to own one of the most iconic movie residences in American pop culture,’ the listing reads.

‘Nestled on a picturesque, tree-lined street in the heart of east Winnetka and elegantly poised behind a wrought-iron gate, the property epitomizes classic Chicago suburban architecture.

‘The residence itself is a masterpiece of traditional style with an effortlessly flowing floorplan brimming with warmth, character, and exquisitely crafted detail.

‘From the promise of movie nights and game days to holiday gatherings surrounded by loved ones, this magical family home truly transcends its architectural pedigree.

‘It’s a chance to own a piece of cinematic history and create lasting memories within its iconic walls.’

Although most of the interior scenes of Home Alone were filmed at a nearby school gym, the Winnetka property served as the exterior for the shoot, and was actually home to a family.

Lauren Abendshien lived there at the time, and lifted the lid on what it was like to open her doors up to the biggest Christmas film ever made.

Appearing on This Morning in 2020, Lauren – who was six years old when production came knocking – explained the wild measures they had to take in their own home to avoid interrupting the action.

‘We stayed in the house pretty much the entire period they were filming, between four and five months they were there,’ she said.

‘In order to avoid appearing on screen, we would have to crawl around under the window line from room to room.

‘Especially in the evening when it would be much easier for that to show up on camera, You had to do an army crawl from spot to spot in the house.’

‘They would spend time in the house when they weren’t actively filming their scenes,’ she continued.

‘Macaulay Culkin actually used my room as the place he would go to study with his tutor. His brother, who played his cousin Fuller in the film, Kieran [Culkin], he wasn’t filming as much so he would just hang out in my room.’
