BBC weather presenter Abbie Dewhurst has revealed she’s quit the national broadcaster after eight ‘glorious’ years.

Abbie, who joined BBC Yorkshire as a staff weather presenter in May 2016, announced the news in a lengthy post on social media.

The 30-year-old told her 33,000 Instagram followers she was leaving her ‘dream job’ in a matter of weeks.

‘The only thing crazier than landing your dream job is handing your notice in for it…’ she began before telling readers to ‘buckle up for a long, emotional caption’.

‘8 years ago today I walked into BBC Yorkshire as a staff weather presenter for the first time and, in spite of the initial 2:30am alarms, have been living my actual dream in this amazing corporation ever since,’ she wrote.

‘But as they say, all good things must come to an end and the end is in sight (still a couple of weeks off so plenty more reminiscent spam to come).

‘There aren’t enough thank you’s in the world to everyone who has made this journey so marvellous and it really has been a journey. I walked into that first day as an excited 22 year old (what a baby I was 🥺) and have spent 8 glorious years waking up before the sun, keeping you company on your morning routines, helping you prep for the day, hopefully providing a touch of entertainment but most importantly becoming someone you trust and can rely on (even if the weather isn’t an exact science!).’

She went on to write that she’d met some wonderful people, a handful of which ‘will become life-long friends’.

‘Thank you for your patience in the early days, your company at hours most people only see when catching a flight and your constant encouragement and unwavering belief in my somewhat unhinged ideas & dreams.’

Reflecting on the rollercoaster of events she’d been through with her viewers, Abbie mentioned ‘a global pandemic, royal events both good and bad, extreme heat, devastating floods, general elections’ and how she’d also ‘hosted a show on national radio, reported from Wimbledon, covered stories about pigs and viral social media videos and most memorably, took part in a Children in Need tandem bike ride with Peter Levy’.

The broadcaster said her job had been ‘a dream come true’ and then thanked viewers for ‘welcoming me onto your screens, into your radios and onto your phones’.

‘It’s been a privilege that’s not lost on me. The future is looking bright,’ she concluded the post.

In her post, Abbie also shared a photo revealing she’d initially been rejected from the BBC after applying for a work experience role, before she eventually landed a permanent job.

She was flooded with messages of support, with one viewer saying they had watched Abbie for ‘many years’ and that she would be ‘sorely missed’.

‘I’m sad to hear that you’re leaving. You’ll be really missed. Thank you for brightening up our evenings, even when the weather was lousy. We’ll miss your lovely smile. Good luck for the future, and love to your family,’ James commented.

‘So many highlights in 8 years, and so many early starts, fair play! Good luck for the next chapter Abbie, you’ll smash it, I’m sure!’ Dan added.

After announcing the news, Abbie shared a follow-up and said she’d been ‘overwhelmed’ by the ‘lovely messages and outpouring of love’ from viewers.
