Britain’s Got Talent hit with Ofcom complaints over ‘super distasteful’ Titanic act-Meghna Amin-Entertainment – Metro

A Britain’s Got Talent act has been blasted as ‘super distasteful’ and hit with Ofcom complaints from angry fans.

Drag performer Chantaaaal sparked fury after their audition which aired on Saturday, in which they claimed to be dressed as the Titanic and sung Celine Dion’s My Heart Will Go On.

Simon Cowell was somewhat stunned throughout the act, while fellow judges Alesha Dixon, Amanda Holden and Bruno Tonioli were left howling with laughter.

Those at home didn’t quite agree though, branding Chantaaaal’s performance ‘distasteful’, with Ofcom receiving 78 complaints.

X user Jodie fumed: ‘I actually don’t know how that Titanic act made it to television…like people edited and approved of this ?!!! It’s disgusting, people DIED!! It’s a tragedy it is NOT funny. Really really distasteful…’

‘I’ll be honest, that Titanic Drag Act was SUPER distasteful and not funny in the slightest,’ Robyn agreed.

@minimocha fumed: ‘Very bad taste in a show going down the gutter. The titanic sinking was an awful catastrophe and the act was awful aswell.’

Amanda echoed: ‘Is it just me or is it completely out of order to make a joke act around a tragic event where people died.’

‘More than 1500 folk lost their lives in the sinking of RMS Titanic. It was a human catastrophe, not a comedy. Just saying…,’ Nicola wrote.

Others however rushed to defend Chantaaaal, with Lee writing: ‘i know im miles behind on #BGT but the drag artist who dressed up as the titanic. absoultely brilliant, 1 of favourite auditions of this yr.’

‘I cannot stop laughing at that titanic man on #bgt,’ Laura agreed, while Heidi said: ‘I loved the Titanic act.’

At one point mid-song, Chantaaaal acted out feeling freezing cold, and even had a part of their costume representing an iceberg pop-up behind them, before the lights on their costume went out and they were ‘saved’ by Ant and Dec throwing out a life jacket.

They were met with roaring applause from the audience in the arena, after even showing how the funnel they wore as a headpiece puffed out smoke like a ship’s.

Despite the outrage and Ofcom complaints, the singer walked away with praise from all four judges, as Simon said: ‘No one has ever actually sang, and been the boat, and the iceberg, and the ocean at the same time – that’s a first.’

‘I nearly burst my guts I was laughing so much,’ Bruno added, while Alesha called the act ‘genius’.

‘Human beings, we’re all nuts, but in the best way possible,’ she went on, before Amanda kicked off the four yes’.

The Titanic tragedy in 1912, depicted in the Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet-starring film, saw more than 1,500 people die from the 2,240 passengers and crew on board.

Britain’s Got Talent continues at 8pm tonight on ITV1.
