Gavin and Stacey fans really will have to bid farewell to the show for real this time, according to creator Ruth Jones.

The series, also written by James Corden, originally came to an end in 2010, before returning in 2019 for a one-off Christmas special.

The festive episode finished with the ultimate cliffhanger after Nessa (Ruth) spontaneously proposed to Smithy (James) just before the credits rolled.

With the return leaving us with more questions than answers, it made sense that it would eventually return.

After years of being asked if there would be more Gavin and Stacey, they put fans out of their misery by confirming we’re heading back to Barry Island and Billericay for another Christmas day show.

Everyone needs to make sure they soak up every second, as Ruth, 57, vows this will be the last time we get to hear Uncle Bryn (Rob Brydon) avoid the subject of the fishing trip, or Mick and Pam Shipman (Larry Lamb and Alison Steadman) squabble over anything.

‘I’m so thrilled by how much people love it. It’s a huge huge compliment,’ Ruth said on BBC Woman’s Hour before delivering the bad news.

‘It will be the end,’ she stated.

Despite her definitive answer, Ruth isn’t sure whether she’ll ever stop being asked about it.

‘Will people still say to me: “Is there going to be any more Gavin and Stacey?” I don’t know because they’ve been asking that question for years and I’ve said “No” because until you know for definite that it can happen, you can’t say anything.’

The actress then expressed her disappointment that the news was leaked before an official announcement.

‘It was unfortunate as James and I wanted to give everybody a nice surprise and I think that it was really mean that they leaked it because it also meant that I had to lie to people, to friends and family, because they were all saying “is it happening?”

She added: ‘The reality is that until you have your cast booked, budget worked out, all of those things, you cannot say categorically that it is going to happen.’

The happy news the finale was happening was confirmed on May 3 with an Instagram post by James, 45.

The former Late Late Show host posed for a selfie with Ruth while holding the script.

Sheridan played Rudi, the sister of James’s Smithy, in the BBC sitcom (Picture: BBC)

‘Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James ❤️,’ the accompanying caption read.

Since the exciting post, limited details have been shared, but there is speculation Sheridan Smith could be dusting off her wheelies and reprising her role as Smithy’s sister Rudi. She would be joining Matthew Horne and Joanna Page who play the titular characters, as well as the family members who’ve become a beloved part of the show.

Neil the baby actor Oscar Hartland has previously shared with Metro.co.uk, the direction he’d like his character to go down.

‘Neil should have a dark turn. He has always been very likeable, so that would be fun,’ he remarked.
