The list of upcoming big screen adaptations of video games continues to grow, as a movie based on Just Cause kicks into action.

As shown by The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Amazon’s Fallout series, movies and TV shows based on video games have never been more popular or successful.

As such, there’s now a rush of video game adaptations currently in the works, between a Minecraft movie with Jack Black, a Splinter Cell series, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, Death Stranding and The Legend Of Zelda.

We can now add a slightly more obscure addition to the list, as a movie based on action game series Just Cause is now in development.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Square Enix and Avalanche Studios have teamed up with Universal Pictures on the project, which is set to be helmed by Blue Beetle director Ángel Manuel Soto.

Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, who produced The Fall Guy and Nobody, will serve as producers on the adaptation.

A movie based on Just Cause has actually been talked about since 2010, but it’s been in a state of flux ever since. Jason Momoa was originally attached to star back in 2017, but it’s unclear whether he’s still involved.

Various directors have been connected to the project over the years, between Brad Peyton (Rampage), Derek Kolstad (John Wick) and Michael Dowse (Stuber). It seems like the project is actually getting off the ground though with Ángel Manuel Soto and Universal.

Created by Avalanche Studios, Just Cause is an open world action game led by protagonist Rico Rodriguez. The first game in the series was released in the PS2 generation in 2006 and spawned three sequels, with the latest being 2018’s Just Cause 4.

Considering Just Cause is mostly geared around open world chaos over any compelling narrative, it’s hard to see how a movie will work without devolving into generic action film fair – but we’ll reserve judgment until a trailer arrives.

Despite Just Cause 4 underperforming sales wise, Square Enix is believed to be currently developing a fifth entry in the series.
