League Of Legends great Faker is first to be inducted into the Hall Of Legends, but the celebratory skin bundle is being condemned by fans.

Purchasable loot boxes and skins have been one of the most controversial topics in video games for years, becoming an important revenue stream for games like Counter-Strike 2, EA Sports FC 24, and League Of Legends.

These skins and loot boxes can cost a lot of money, and a new League Of Legends skin, to honour its greatest-ever player, Faker, takes the cake.

The skin costs up to £400 to obtain and comes with a digital signature, but fans are not impressed calling it ‘an insult’.

Faker will be the first League Of Legends player to be inducted into the Hall Of Legends, and to celebrate the Korean pro Riot Games is organising an in-game event (only playable with a battle pass) and purchasable skins.

One of the skins, the Immortalised Legend Ahri cosmetic, comes in three price brackets that fans can buy: 5,430 Riot Points (RP), 32,430 RP, and 59,260 RP.

Converting those into real money reveals that the cheapest skin would set you back £39, followed by £220, and a whopping £400 for the most expensive skin, which comes with an in-game feature that shows Faker’s trademark move, a digital autograph, and other perks.

Fans took to social media to condemn the price tag, with Don’t Panic on Reddit saying: ‘It’s a celebration, poor people not invited. I understand whale-baiting, but using Faker for this purpose is disgusting. Faker himself is known for not using skins. What a joke.’

‘They must have added a zero in error, right? Even without the zero it’s expensive,’ Sandri Dark adds.

Riot Games must have anticipated criticism from fans for the hefty prices, as it has added a section in the event’s Frequently Asked Question page explaining how the prices were decided.

It boldly claims that the three price brackets offer something for everyone, from casual gamers to more diehard collectors.

Faker is being inducted into the Hall Of Legends based on his many achievements in League Of Legends over the last 10 years, including four World Championships.

Other accolades that have earned him nicknames such as the Michael Jordan of Esports and the Unkillable Demon King are Best Esports Athlete at The Game Awards in 2017 and 2023, and being inducted into the Esports Hall Of Fame in 2019.

It’s important to note that there is no need to buy any of the skin bundles to play the Hall Of Legends event, once it goes live June 12, but the event will cost 1,950 RP (£15) by itself.
