Chris Evans has been forced to address a picture of him signing what appeared to be a ‘bomb’, after it resurfaced on social media.

A photo showing the Captain America star writing a message on a ‘missile’ held by a US Air Force officer went viral, with many calling him out online.

The image emerged days after former Republican presidential hopeful Nikki Haley was slammed for penning ‘finish them’ on an artillery shell in Israel.

Taking to Instagram, the 42-year-old posted the picture on his story, along with a message clearing up ‘misinformation’.

‘There’s a lot of misinformation surrounding this picture,’ he began. ‘Some clarification: This image was taken during a USO tour in 2016.

‘I went with a group of actors, athletes and musicians to show appreciation for our service members. The object I was asked to sign is not a bomb, or a missile, or a weapon of any kind.

He clarified the image in an Instagram statement (Picture: Instagram)

‘It’s an inert object used for training or display purposes only.’

Chris also shared a screenshot from a fact check by AFP, which included a quote from the Air Force – confirming that the object is a ‘training aid’.

A spokesperson told the outlet in February: ‘The object Chris Evans is signing in the USO tour photo from 2016 is an explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) inert training aid.

‘The object is meant to model an artillery shell and is for display and training purposes only.’

Jennifer Passey, director of communications for the United Service Organizations (USO) also sent an email to AFP, explaining that the image was taken in 2016.

‘I can verify this is a photo from our 2016 USO Holiday Tour and was taken by a DoD photographer at that time,’ she added.

The picture was snapped while at a base in Turkey, during a tour set up by the USO – a non-profit organization that ‘offers a variety of programs and services designed to support our service members and their families’.

According to the publication, Scarlett Johansson, Maya DiRado, Craig Campbell and Ray Allen were also among those on the trip.

The clarification Chris shared on social media comes after Nikki sparked outrage with her recent visit to Israel over Memorial Day Weekend.

During a tour of an artillery station, the former US ambassador for the United Nations was seen donning a tactical vest and inspecting the shells, before signing one.

In pen, she inscribed, ‘FINISH THEM!’ on a shell – amid Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas.

Her visit came just hours after a newborn was ‘beheaded’ and children ‘burnt alive’ in a bombing on makeshift shelter in the city of Rafah.

Many called her out over the move on social media, with Amnesty International’s official Twitter account slamming the ‘stunt’.

They tweeted: ‘Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley signed Israeli artillery shells with the message “Finish Them!”

‘Conflict is no place for stunts. Conflict has rules. Civilians must be protected.’

2012 actor John Cusack also branded her ‘spineless, heartless, vicious, brutal, callous, inhuman’ and a ‘ghoul’.
