David Duchovny has broken the hearts of his fans after sharing a touching poem dedicated to his beloved dog Brick following his death.

The X Files star, 63, had an incredibly close relationship with his rescue dog, who he adopted in 2015.

He regularly shared photos alongside the adorable pup, including on the canine’s own Instagram page which boasts more than 16,000 followers keeping up with his antics.

Duchovny shared that he had to decide to have Brick put to sleep, and dedicated a poignant poem to the legacy he leaves behind.

Sharing a picture cuddling up to his pooch on Instagram, he wrote: ‘I put down my dog this morning/And cried some/mourning/the loss of his mute expressive soul.

‘That afternoon, at work, a blue sky punctuated only by small loitering clouds/The world moves on in its blithe way/and doesn’t care/About a little dog—-

‘It’s already as if he never existed/But he did/He sure did.’

Gillian Anderson, who starred alongside Duchovny in The X Files, shared her condolences.

‘Awww Double D I’m so sorry. He was your guy. RIP Brick Duchovny,’ she wrote.

Fans flocked to console the Californication star over his loss, with many left ‘sobbing’ and ‘weeping’ over his heartfelt words.

‘Your world cares about your beautifully-named dog and I bet he’s resting proudly ~ What a beautiful dedication,’ Eliza Roberts wrote.

Andrew Liegey shared: ‘I was once told, and I don’t know if it’s true, but I like it none the less. Mongolian Buddhists supposedly believe the dog is the last stage of reincarnation before becoming a human again. Perhaps you might bump into him again soon enough. I’m hoping to run into a few friends again.’

Ryan Paevey added: ‘Watching X files right now…..I know words from a stranger/fan are probably just white noise, but I’m so sorry for your loss.’

Many said Brick will be ‘loved and missed by many’ and shared their own experiences of ‘the worst loss ever’ in saying goodbye to a pet.

Hart Hanson said: ‘Ah, condolences. Pure simple sadness when you lose a dog. Those eyes. That tail. So sorry.’

Sammie Graham wrote: ‘There’s no greater pain in the world than the loss of a pet’, while Laurie Steer shared: ‘My brother found Brick as a stray. Before he made his way to @davidduchovny to live his best life possible! What a great team you two made.’

‘Im sorry for you loss. Our furry babies have a place in our heart that can never be filled again,’ Megan Shaw added.

Alongside a picture of the dog lying on his back, it read: ‘I’m sad to say goodbye to all my friends, but I am grateful for the life I lived. My life was a beautiful journey.

‘One day I was living under the highway by myself and the next day I found the best family and roommates who gave me snacks, air conditioning, and a grassy field to play in.

‘I also got to go to movie sets, concerts and meet a lot of interesting humans. Remember above all to take care of each other, take care of the planet and have a snack.’

Earth Animal previously shared a story from Philip Steir, who rescued Brick before he found his forever home with Duchovny.

He shared how a friend of the actor reached out to him, expressing his adoration for the pup.

‘I was exiting the freeway in Los Angeles in 2015 when I spotted a dog in the bushes. It took me half an hour to get him on a leash, and I drove this skittish but street-savvy little dog home. He was filthy, stinky, tired, hungry, but in good shape and quite handsome,’ Steir shared.

‘I put him in my garage for the night with lots of tasty food and posted on Facebook looking for a foster or his possible parent.

‘The next day I received a private message from a friend of the actor David Duchovny that he wanted him ASAP. Legally, he had to go to a shelter for five days to give any rightful guardian a chance to claim him, but no one did.

‘David adopted his new dog up and off to a mansion in Malibu he went. David immediately named him Brick for his sturdy appearance and as a nod to pro football star D’Brickashaw Ferguson.

‘In Malibu, he ran on a gated private beach shared with other big-name movie stars. He began a new jet-setting life, travelling with David to his lavish Manhattan penthouse, to David’s film sets, David is on, and on his tour bus with The David Duchovny Band. Quite the life and life change for such a beautiful boy and a sweetheart of a man.’
