10 glorious years (Nintendo)

A decade on the road
Just found out that Mario Kart 8 is 10 years old this week, because of course it was first released on the Wii U and the Switch version is basically just a port. Apart from making me feel old I just want to congratulate the game on being a true evergreen.

It’s very hard to imagine how they can ever beat the current game and it still looks great now, despite being a decade old Wii U game. The amount of tracks you can get with the current DLC added on is incredible and excellent value for money.

It’s kept my family entertained for all this time and I feel it’s definitely one of the best games ever made. A well deserved success and proof that it’s good games that sell consoles. Nothing else matters in comparison.

Letter from the past
I guess there’s not going to be much of a reaction for the State of Play in today’s Inbox, given how late it started on Thursday. Yet more proof that PlayStation is purely being run as an American business nowadays. It would’ve been 7am Japanese time, which isn’t exactly convenient for them either.

Anyway, I’m assuming not much of interest was announced and that it’s very quickly going to be forgotten about, just like all the others from the last two years. I agree with the reader from Thursday who said that Sony shouldn’t have done it at all if they weren’t going to make an effort, although I guess technically I don’t know if they did yet.

It does make sense to me that they ‘went first’ though. If Xbox and Nintendo have good events then Sony is going to look even worse if they try to come in at the end with a damp squib. Like I said, everyone will probably have forgotten they even had one by the time the Nintendo Direct comes around.

GC: As the State of Play wasn’t until 11pm none of the letters here today are from people that have seen it.

Shipping forecast
I’ve been thinking about what Capcom could do after they run out of numbered sequels (and Code: Veronica) to remake and I think it’d be fun if they got purposefully obscure. I’d love to see a remake of the Game Boy game Resident Evil Gaiden, which was Barry Burton on a boat. There’s nothing you’d keep in terms of design but I don’t think Barry ever showed up in a game again after that, so it’d be nice to know what happened to him.

Maybe they could even make a silk purse out of the sow’s ears that are Operation Raccoon City and Umbrella Corps. Or maybe the lightgun games? I don’t remember what their stories were but some of them were original stories I think. I’d still rather see any of them remade than Resident Evil 5 and 6.

GC: Barry and his daughter were in Resident Evil: Revelations 2 as main characters. Survivor and Dead Aim both had original stories. Dead Aim was also set on a ship, actually, as was Revelations 1.

Devil may cheer
Everyone’s talking about new Resident Evil games, and I’m sure they’re coming, but isn’t it about time we heard about Devil May Cry 6? As far as I understand the last game was a success, and I certainly enjoyed it, but we’ve not had a peep about any kind of follow-up.

I hope that could be something we hear about this year, as I wouldn’t have thought Capcom would want to let it be forgotten, especially if they’re doing well at the moment and have the resources to make it.

I’d like to see some more new characters but my main desire for the game is just to keep it strange and stupid and not get some fool idea to ‘ground’ it and make it serious. I think a lot of Capcom’s current success is because they’ve avoided that kind of thing, and it’s certainly something I like about them.

The clock is ticking
I see the remaster (or is it remake?) of Clock Tower on PS1 is up for physical order on Friday from Limited Run Games. The remaster is called Clock Tower Rewind and is made by the excellent WayForward. Will GameCentral be reviewing the game and when do you think you might review it?

I was thinking of picking up the physical copy if it reviews well, as the original is very expensive so this is a
cheaper way to get the game physical for me.

PS: I hope there is a new Astro Bot game announced this week, VR or non-VR, and also a port of Half-Life: Alyx for PlayStation VR2.
Currently playing: Pepper Grinder (PC)

GC: We think technically it’s a remaster, as it certainly still looks like a SNES (not PS1) game. But WayForward is doing a lot of work on it, especially in terms of the translation. We’ll definitely review it, but it has no release date at the moment.

Current trends
Just saw the info from US console sales last month, with the PlayStation 5 8% ahead of PlayStation 4 and Xbox Series X/S 13% below Xbox One. Incredible to think that after the disaster of the Xbox One that the next console from Xbox would do even worse. It’s not hard to understand why, with the lack of games and Game Pass not being a draw, but this was meant to be the big comeback, based on lessons learned from the Xbox One reveal. So much for that.

Clearly 8% above isn’t great for Sony though. It could’ve been so much better than that if only they hadn’t stopped making games and I do not understand why they don’t see that, or why they thought the current course they’re on would be anything more than a disaster.

I haven’t seen the State of Play as I write this, but I have very little faith that it’s going to explain anything or suggest any kind of change of plans. I hope it does, maybe the two new CEOs will apologise for the last two years and promise better in the future. Maybe I’ll win the lottery too, but I doubt it.

They’ve got a perfectly good excuse but there’s not even much hope that the Nintendo Direct will be good this year. Although if they pull Metroid Prime 4 out of the bag and win ‘not-E3’ I will laugh.

Expensive headgear
Even with money off the PlayStation VR2 I still can’t believe how expensive it is. I also can’t believe anyone would pay that much knowing Sony dropped support for it before it was even out. I understand it’s a very good piece of hardware but what’s the use if the company that made it has no faith in it?

The news of a PC adapter only seems to underline that it’s pointless for the purpose it had originally been designed for. I just hope the Meta Quest is doing well or otherwise this is going to put the cause of VR headsets back for another decade. Who on earth would buy a PlayStation VR3 at this point?

Glass half full
Given the PlayStation event is probably going to have been a disappointment I think we should look on the positive side for gaming at the moment. Maybe people could write in with what they’re enjoying or looking forward to at the moment.

Personally, I’m really looking forward to Elden Ring: Shadow Of The Erdtree and having been scooting around The Lands Between, reminding myself of the controls and trying to do all the side quests I missed. I try never to use guides when playing a game, but I think it’s reasonable to use them during the endgame – when you’ve beaten the game yourself and have found everything you’re likely to find naturally.

There sure are some obscure side quests in Elden Ring, I’ve got to say. I don’t see how anyone could’ve even found them themselves, let alone solved them. It has been fun to see all the different endings though, even if I’m going to keep with the Ranni one as my personal canon ending.

What’s struck me though is that everyone I think I’m helping… they always end up dead even if I successfully complete the quest. I’m beginning to get the feeling everyone would’ve been a lot better off if I hadn’t tried to help at all. No good deed goes unpunished, as they say!

Best of luck to the new Rocksteady company. I hope they do something that’s Batman-esque, just please no more Riddler puzzles. Hellblade has made me absolutely sick of them.

Is there no date for the Nintendo Direct yet? Everyone else seems to have announced theirs, including Sony, but that’s the one I’m looking forward to the most.
Bronezo

GC: There’s no date, no. Just sometime in June.
