Piers Morgan has leaped to the defence of Donald Trump after he became the first US president to be convicted of a felony.

On Thursday, a jury of 12 New Yorkers found the former president guilty of all 34 counts of falsifying business records around a $130,000 payment his ex-fixer Michael Cohen made to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Piers took to social media after the decision, and described the ruling as ‘shameful’ and a ‘massive overreach’.

‘This is a sad, shameful and ridiculous day for America,’ he wrote on X.

‘To drag a former President, who is running for President again, through criminal courts over something so trivial feels a massive overreach & an incredibly divisive and obviously politically partisan action.’

He added: ‘Trump’s donation websites are crashing… my guess is this verdict will propel him back into the White House.’

The 59-year-old broadcaster isn’t the only celebrity to back Trump over the conviction, with Caitlyn Jenner, 74, throwing her support behind the 77-year-old businessman and reality star turned politician.

She tweeted: ‘An outrageous day for America. The entire process has been outrageous, of course. Shame on the state of New York. Shame on the corrupt DOJ.’

And she has even launched a digital fundraiser for the former president, writing: ‘IT’S NOW MORE IMPORTANT THAN EVER! TO GIVE BACK TO TRUMP! (sic)’

The former president and presumptive 2024 Republican nominee was ‘red in the face’ and he and his son Eric Trump, who sat behind him in the courtroom, appeared upset after the conviction was read out, CNN reported.

Trump frowned and grabbed his son’s hand and shook it rapidly, then they began walking out of the courtroom.

‘Our whole country is being rigged right now,’ Trump told reporters as he left the courtroom, where he has spent the past seven weeks attending his historic trial.

‘This was done by the Biden administration in order to wound or hurt an opponent, a political opponent.’

Trump vowed to ‘keep fighting’, adding: ‘We’ll fight ’til the end and we’ll win because our country’s gone to hell.’

He concluded with: ‘We will fight for our Constitution. This is long from over.’

In a statement, a spokesperson for current US President Joe Biden said: ‘No one is above the law.

‘Donald Trump has always mistakenly believed he would never face consequences for breaking the law for his own personal gain. The threat Trump poses to our democracy has never been greater.

‘He is running an increasingly unhinged campaign of revenge and retribution, pledging to be a dictator “on day one” and calling for our Constitution to be “terminated” so he can regain and keep power.’
