A group of friends have made an authentic tank simulator using a racing wheel, VR headset, and a hydraulic cylinder to play World Of Tanks.

Playing a video game in the traditional way just isn’t enough for some gamers, as they take it to the extreme by, for example, building the infamous £277,000 PlayStation Nintendo themselves, or create the artefact from Baldur’s Gate 3 as a functioning Xbox controller.

Now a group of friends have taken things to an even more ridiculous level, using a racing wheel, a VR headset, and other home-made mechanics to control a tank in World Of Tanks.

A video showing how it all works is going viral on social media, with impressed fans calling it ‘the best DIY [do it yourself] simulator I’ve ever seen’.

The video shows how one person is using a racing wheel for driving games to steer the tank, while another is loading bottles of water into a home made hydraulic contraption used as the tank’s barrel, as a third person is using a swirling mechanic to aim the barrel and fire.

There’s even a VR headset rigged above their heads that works as a periscope to see out of, just like in a tank.

It’s a lot to take in, so we recommend you watch the video below, but essentially what they’re doing is playing World Of Tanks on a big screen but instead of just using a controller they’ve made the inside of the tank with many different, connected parts, that all work while playing the game.

The video has been posted all over social media, and it has gained 30,000 upvotes in one Reddit post, where onlookers are as impressed as they are shocked at the scope of the work to make the simulator.

‘LMAO, so much extra-ness just to play World Of Tanks. I love it,’ says Sharkytrs.

‘Bro, at this point just join the armoured division in an army, would be less of a hassle,’ Tasmilov says.

‘Wow! Probably the best DIY simulator I’ve seen,’ Teerendog adds.

The original video was posted on Chinese video-sharing site BiliBili, and there’s not a lot of information to go on other than it’s very popular and it looks like it could be made by students at a school or university.

As such, unfortunately, there’s no tutorial or explanation to exactly how they managed to build the simulator and connect it to World Of Tanks.

Nonetheless it’s very impressive and yet another example of the lengths gamers sometimes go to for their favourite games. That being said, although it’s a more authentic experience, it looks a lot more difficult than just using a traditional controller or keyboard and mouse.
