WWE fans don’t know what to think after Cody Rhodes dropped a cryptic hint about his wrestling future hours before SmackDown.

The American Nightmare, who won the Undisputed WWE Championship from Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 40 almost two months ago, is a figurehead in the so-called Renaissance Era the company is currently enjoying, but some people are worried that could change.

On Friday evening, Cody took to social media with a post about the fragility of a career in wrestling.

‘Never know when it might be your last match,’ he wrote on X. ‘Always revel in those moments. 💙 #Smackdown’

The mysterious nature of the post has prompted concern and speculation from fans reading into his comments and thinking the 38-year-old superstar might be forced to hang up his boots.

As well as heartbroken emojis, fans flooded his tweet with messages wondering what’s next for the champ.

‘Don’t scare us like this please Cody,’ begged X user @AFCTom495, while fellow WWE fan @TribalMegastar asked: ‘Are you retiring today Cody wtf?! Nooo.’

Others asked similar questions, with a third fan, @bethany_wwe, pleading: ‘Cody please log back on and explain what you mean, I don’t want to stress for the next few hours 😭😭’

Others pointed to an interaction last week between SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis and veteran AJ Styles, who admitted he doesn’t have much time left in his career as he pleaded for another shot at Cody.

The GM insisted the Phenomenal One would have to earn another opportunity with the champion, but fan @WeWantCody_ suggested Cody’s tweet was actually a nod to his recent Backlash opponent.

They pondered: ‘Gotta be for AJ right? He’s giving him another shot?’

Fan @Navtreaks agreed, adding: ‘Cody Rhodes definitely referring to this from last week where AJ asked for another match. Cody could overrule Aldis and give AJ another shot 👀👀 #SmackDown’

Others think ‘revel’ was a big tease for Uncle Howdy (Picture: WWE)

Another theory for Cody’s post comes from the wording, with ‘revel’ in particular being a very interesting choice, given its links to the late, great Bray Wyatt, who died aged 36 in August 2023.

‘Revel in what you are’ was a key quote from Wyatt’s on-screen storyline with Uncle Howdy, who is set to return to screens as Bo Dallas/Taylor Rotunda – the man behind the mask – looks poised to continue his brother’s legacy.

Cody dropping that word in there seems like no accident, and he could be set to face Howdy and the rumoured Wyatt 6 faction sooner rather than later.
