It’s a strong theory.

Fans of the Knives Out film franchise reckon they’ve already cracked the case of the third movie, Wake Up Dead Man, before filming has even begun.

The hit whodunit saga, which began in 2019 with Knives Out, hit Netflix in 2021 with sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Story, and now a third movie is in the works.

A teaser for Wake Up Dead Man dropped last month in May, with the likes of Glenn Close, Cailee Spenny, John O’Connor, Andrew Scott, and Jeremy Renner joining the illustrious cast.

And fans think the presence of Marvel actor Renner, whose recovery from a near-fatal snow plough accident is going well, reveals all the clues about who the killer will be.

In the first Knives Out film, it was Captain America star Chris Evans who ended up in handcuffs after he murdered Thrombey family housekeeper Fran and attempted to frame Ana De Armas’ carer Marta for another death.

And in Glass Onion, it was Edward Norton’s character Miles Brown who was revealed to be behind two killings – Norton starred in MCU film The Incredible Hulk way back in 2008.

So, all eyes are clearly on Renner, who played Hawkeye in several Marvel movies and his eponymous TV show for Disney Plus – maybe Knives Out director and writer Rian Johnson is double-bluffing us.

And fans are already onto him. On Twitter, @LordAnarchy said: ‘Yeah, Renner is the killer, solely because Evans and Norton were in the MCU and Renner was too lol.’

Meanwhile, @DannyKorcz commented: ‘I’m predicting that Renner’s going to be the killer.’

Another theory posits that Renner will appear as a fictionalised version of himself after he was introduced as the face of a hot sauce brand in Glass Onion.

One person who is extremely unlikely to have anything to do with the murder in Wake Up Dead Man is Benoit Blanc, the detective from the United States played by Daniel Craig.

He’s been the centre of (what will become) the trilogy since its inception, with James Bond star Craig producing an accent that was compared to cartoon character Foghorn Leghorn.

With regards to his future in the franchise, he told Variety in 2022: ‘If Rian keeps writing them, I’ll keep doing them. That’s what makes it easy – he’s such a wonderful writer that it’s there on the page for me to do.’

Meanwhile, Johnson has joked that he’ll keep making the Knives Out films with Craig until the actor blocks him on his phone – so we could be in for several more mysteries yet.

As for Renner, he’s recovering well from the traumatic snow plough accident that left him with 30 broken bones and needing several months of hospital treatment.

On New Year’s Day in 2023, the seven-tonne vehicle hit him and pulled him under – he was airlifted to hospital with his life very much in danger.

Jeremy has had to undergo a long list of treatments but in an Instagram post in January he wrote: ‘Reason number one for my recovery is my daughter. I asked her to “wait for me” when I first saw her January 14 as I arrived home.’

‘As I got better, she got better, less afraid. There is simply no better motivator to recover than to heal your family and friends.

‘With gratitude always, thank you all for your love and support this last full year. I needed every ounce of goodwill and prayer.’
