Acclaimed action movie Godzilla Minus One unexpectedly dropped on Netflix overnight, worldwide.
The two hour action sci-fi became a favourite amongst fans last year not only totting up an impressive 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics and viewers alike but also blowing all the competition out of the water by snatching up the Oscar for best visual effects.
This is despite the Takashi Yamazak-directed film having a very modest budget of around $15million (£11million). It was also the first in the 70-year-long franchise associated with the iconic cinematic monster Godzilla to land an Academy Award.
The film, which grossed over $100million (£78million) at the box office, is set in Japan in the aftermath of the US atomic bombings during World War Two.
It follows a kamikaze pilot named Kōichi Shikishima (Ryunosuke Kamiki), who lands on Odo Island and soon comes face to face with Godzilla, an atomically mutated monster destroying everything in sight.
The movie is available to watch on streaming giant Netflix, except in Japan and France, and so now is your chance to see all the hype for yourself.
‘The possibility of standing on this stage seemed out of reach, but here we stand!’ Takashi said during his Oscars acceptance speech.
Reviewers hailed the Godzilla Minus One when it originally came out and now fans are celebrating its arrival on the streaming platform.
‘Time to run… to Netflix and watch this masterpiece,’ @ericpellinen wrote.

‘This movie rules, one of my absolute favorites from the last few years. I give it my highest recommendation – watch it on the biggest, loudest screen you have,’ @bbw_bbf echoed.
‘GO WATCH LITERALLY THE BEST GODZILLA FILM EVER MADE SO FAR RIGHT NOW. NO OTHER FILM COMPARES,’ @breanimator encouraged.
‘The greatest Godzilla movie ever, as well as my favorite film of 2023. The type of film that makes you glad to be alive. I cannot speak highly enough about this picture. Why are you still reading?! GO WATCH IT!’ yet another user @cromfourwinds raved.
In an interview last year talking about the inspiration behind the film, Takashi said: ‘Whenever Godzilla appears in film, he brings a kind of reflection on nuclear war and any manmade crisis.
‘In postwar Japan, citizens were decimated, survivors everywhere were in desperate need of help, and I wanted audiences to gain an understanding of how Japanese survivors felt after WWII.’
Godzilla Minus One is now available to stream on Netflix.
