Ex-Olympian Greg Rutherford just revealed a ‘harrowing’ ordeal his family went through.

The former Olympic long jumper and Strictly Come Dancing star shared the chilling incident that occurred in his home, leaving his family shaken, with his nearly 200k Instagram followers.

Rutherford took to Instagram to post footage of the aftermath, revealing the chaotic scene following the sudden explosion of one of his skylights.

Rutherford described the experience as ‘one of the most terrifying’ of his life. He recounted the moment in vivid detail: ‘One of our skylights up here just exploded. I was literally standing in the kitchen, watching the TV on the wall, and it just went bang. Glass went everywhere.’

He went on to express his immense relief that his son Milo, nine, was not in the vicinity at the time.

He said: ‘Kid you not, two minutes before, Milo was down here doing some school work. I said, “It’s a nice day, go out on the deck, mate.” And thank God I did that because if not, I can’t even imagine what could have happened.’

The cause of the explosion remains unclear, with Rutherford speculating whether the sun’s heat could have played a role.

‘I’ve no idea if it’s the sun that’s heated it up or if something like this happens, but I cannot explain to you how terrifying. I’ve been walking in and out because I’ve been trying to tidy up today. I’ve walked past this 50 times in the last half an hour. What a harrowing thing to happen,’ he added.

In a follow up post, Rutherford said he was ‘still shaking’ as he dealt with the broken glass covering his living room.

This incident is just the latest in a series of challenges for Rutherford, who was recently forced to withdraw from Dancing On Ice’s 2024 final.

Rutherford, a fan favorite, had to pull out of the competition on the morning of the finale due to a severe injury sustained during rehearsals.

The show’s final saw actor Ryan Thomas crowned champion, who dedicated his victory to Rutherford, acknowledging the hard work and dedication of his fellow competitor.

Rutherford later provided a detailed account of the accident that led to his withdrawal.

In a candid post, he revealed the gruesome nature of his injury, describing how he ‘effectively gave [himself] a C-section’ while attempting a daring move on the ice.

The former Olympian shared images of his scars, underscoring the severity of the mishap. ‘It was a freak accident. I was trying to leap through the legs of two professional ice-skaters during our routine and ended up severely injuring myself,’ he explained.
