Is it GAME over? (GAME)

UK retailer GAME will close down its reward scheme next month, leaving only a limited time to claim any leftover credit.

After the retailer confirmed plans to stop selling pre-owned games earlier this year, GAME has now announced it will stop its rewards programme in July.

The UK high street chain revealed the reward programme, including the elite membership tier, will cease on July 31, 2024. After this date, customers will no longer be able to redeem GAME reward or elite points either in-store or online.

You’ll be able to earn rewards on purchases up until 11.59pm on July 15, but after that date, any games or accessories you buy will no longer gain you points. You’ll then have two weeks to claim your remaining reward points and use them, before they’re wiped entirely.

‘We would strongly urge you to redeem your GAME reward points prior to the closure date on purchases in GAME stores or online to avoid disappointment,’ the notice reads.

‘After the closure date the GAME reward points will be reset to zero and the GAME reward account will be closed, you will no longer be able to access it and you will no longer be able to redeem your GAME reward points.’

As described in the terms and conditions, the minimum amount of points you can redeem against a purchase is 400, which gives you £1 off. Any amount of points below that value is essentially worthless, as you can’t redeem them for cash or against a purchase.

If you’re an elite subscriber, which grants access to special promotions and giveaways, any outstanding paid membership months will be eligible for a refund. You can check out a full breakdown on the FAQ page.

GAME stores housed within Sports Direct are already no longer accepting GAME reward points as a payment method – so you’ll have to find one of the last few remaining main stores on the high street to spend your points, or simply retrieve them online.

This is said to be part of an ongoing shift with the retailer, as GAME moves its operations into other stores under the Fraser Group, like Sports Direct.

It’s another bleak trimming down of UK game retailers on the high street though, with CeX being one of the few other major chains still selling physical games.
