Neil Druckmann has said Naughty Dog is looking to move beyond The Last Of Us, but what could the studio’s next project be?
Aside from 2016’s Uncharted 4, and its standalone expansion The Lost Legacy, the entirety of Naughty Dog’s output over the past decade has been associated with The Last Of Us.
Along with the two mainline games, the studio’s investment into the IP has included DLC, three different remasters, and a HBO TV series. Naughty Dog’s co-president Neil Druckmann even recently confirmed he has a concept for a third game in the series.
While The Last Of Us is easily the studio’s most successful franchise, both critically and commercially, Druckmann has expressed how Naughty Dog is looking to move beyond the series.
Speaking in a new interview, about the developer’s future, Druckmann said: ‘I promise you, we will not be The Last Of Us studio forever.’
In the brief interview, Druckmann mentioned that numerous games are in development at Naughty Dog, including ‘multiple single-player projects’.
While he doesn’t describe the projects specifically, he suggests they will be narrative-driven like Uncharted and The Last Of Us.
‘We create experiences that are steeped in story and character, especially relationships,’ Druckmann told the Los Angeles Times. ‘The stories have some sort of philosophical core that everything is going to revolve and feed into.’
This comes after Naughty Dog cancelled multiplayer spin-off The Last Of Us Online last year, so the studio could ‘continue to focus on single-player narrative games’. In the blog post announcement, the studio similarly said it is working on ‘more than one ambitious, brand new single-player game’.
While it’s unclear what these new single-player projects are, Druckmann’s comments imply at least one will be a new IP. Previous rumours have suggested a fantasy themed title is in the works at the studio.

Druckmann recently teased that the studio’s next game is ‘maybe the most excited’ he’s been for a project, adding: ‘I’m not only excited for this game that we’re making – and it’s, it’s something really fresh for us – but I’m also excited to see how the world reacts to it.
‘Because of The Last Of Us, and the success of the show, people even outside of gaming are looking at us to see what it is that we put out next. I’m very excited to see what the reaction for this thing will be – and I’ve already said too much about it. I’ll stop there.’
The original version of the interview ended up being taken down, after it transpired that it had been heavily edited by Sony, causing Druckmann to complain of ‘significant errors’.
The big question now is when we’ll hear about Naughty Dog’s next project. It’s been four years since 2020’s The Last Of Us Part 2, with various remasters and remakes released since then, but Sony had its big summer preview event last week and nothing was mentioned then.
