Zelda: Twilight Princess – it’s already been remastered on the Wii U (Nintendo)

A remaster of Twilight Princess is the least of the Zelda rumours at the moment, as fans try to guess what newly leaked codenames refer to.

The PlayStation State of Play on Thursday night might have a been a disappointment but there is hope that this month’s various other showcases will offer a greater level of surprise and excitement. Ever since the end of E3 there’s been a proliferation of smaller ones, with over a dozen different events of various levels of visibility scheduled for June.

The biggest though are the Xbox Games Showcase, Summer Games Fest, Ubisoft Forward and, as the only event that doesn’t yet have a date, a new Nintendo Direct.

There’s usually less that leaks out about Nintendo, compared to any other event, but sometimes there’s the odd rumour that turns out to be true and at the moment there’s an awful lot of talk about new Zelda games…

Rumours of a remaster of Breath Of The Wild for the Switch 2 console have been around for months now and renewed recently with the leak of what is apparently the project’s codename.

However, there’s also been talk of projects that may be for the current Switch, as a final release this year. Before the pandemic, Nintendo was trying to release a new Zelda (and Mario) game every year, even if that just a minor spin-off or remaster.

They’d no doubt like to get back to that and leaker PapaGenos has been hinting at some kind of new game in which Zelda is the main playable character – which is something Nintendo themselves has implied will happen in the future.

Strangely, much of the discussion online revolves around codenames, which while seemingly undecipherable at first glance do seem to follow a pattern.

The usually reliable Midori has suggested that there’s a new project at Nintendo with the codename Edward, with many pointing out that the codename of the Zelda: Link’s Awakening remake was Richard.

That led to fans suggesting it may be a remake of Capcom’s Zelda: Oracle Of Ages and Oracle Of Seasons but PapaGenos has seemed to indicate that is not the case.

Midori themselves pointed out the codename’s similarity to Link’s Awakening but if it’s not another Game Boy game it’s not clear what it might be, if it’s also a remake – although the classic A Link To The Past is one obvious possibility.

Another long-standing rumour is that Nintendo has remasters of Twilight Princess and/or The Wind Waker ready to be released on the Switch, which they can use to fill a gap in their schedules – a gap that has widened since the apparent delay of the Switch 2 into next year.

Midori appears to confirm that a Twilight Princess remaster is ready to go, although she claims not to know when it, and the similarly rumoured Metroid Prime 2 and 3 remasters, will be released.

Although sometime this year is the obvious guess, others have suggested they might be released next year or later as new releases for the original Switch – as a means to keep those that do not buy the new console placated.

There’s plenty of plausible suggestions amongst all these rumours but the problem is that even if some, or even most, of them are true there’s no guarantee Nintendo will talk about them during this month’s Nintendo Direct… whenever it takes place.

Would you want A Link To The Past remake? (Nintendo)
