American popstar Sky Ferreira has left fans baffled after turning up late for a concert before performing completely in the dark.

The singer-songwriter, 31, broke out in 2013 with her debut solo album Night Time, My Time, which was named as the best album of that year by numerous music publications.

However, she has only sporadically released new music in recent years due to troubles with her label, with only standalone singles being put on to streaming services.

And her Sunday night appearance at the Sydney Opera House got off to the worst possible start when fans reported her being over an hour late to the stage.

Sky was scheduled to headline the Vivid Festival at 7.30pm, when she would be playing songs from her critically acclaimed debut solo album.

According to people at the Opera House, Sky eventually came to the stage just before 9pm, but proceeded to perform on a blackened stage with her back turned to the crowd.

On Twitter, user @GianniBorrelli, said: ‘Sky Ferreira showed up 80 mins late to her Sydney gig and is performing the whole show in the dark with her back turned the crowd, who’s surprised?’

Despite the issues, however, some fans were delighted with Sky’s performance once she showed up: ‘She was almost two hours late but it was worth it to see her live.’

Before the show got under way, some concert goers were worried the show would be cancelled – thankfully, it seems the delay was caused by issues that were resolved on the night.

It seems it’s not the first Sky Ferreira show in recent weeks and months to be affected by delays and technical issues, with one fan calling a Los Angeles show ‘a beautiful disaster’.

On Twitter, user @CantQuitBalling, said: ‘Sky Ferreira at the Wiltern was a beautiful disaster. 2 hours late. Sound and lighting issues the whole time. Honestly respect her for not giving up and playing until midnight.’

A recent show in Manchester at the O2 Ritz was shrouded in controversy after the singer let fans know she wouldn’t be taking to the stage until after 9.30pm on a Sunday night.

Some fans demanded their money back from the gig, while others criticised Sky for coming on late and then apparently having her last two songs cut off by the venue’s curfew.

In the weeks after the show, however, she posted a statement on social media, hitting out at fans from the Manchester gig who had been sending negative messages to her.

‘Some of you are relentless and it’s impossible to ignore at this point. The narrative and negativity I constantly receive online (specifically related to the UK tour) doesn’t add up.’

She continued: ‘It was completely different in real life. Stop being weird and throw away your phones. Thanks.’

Her tour in Australia concludes in Brisbane on Wednesday, before she heads back to her home country for a string of US shows in September.
